HM happens at the exact same time as CS. It's a side story. You literally see Takumi run by and clear out the one Demons hacker with the Growlmon in the first few chapters, Nokia's progression as a character is focused on quite a bit in HM with Keisuke being the main reason why she is who she is in CS, Yuuko's progression as a character is because of the HM crew, and Arata is direct friends with several characters from HM and the story revolves around that quite a bit.

In the World games generally training is better overall. Fighting is necessary for specific Digivolutions (Some require 10-15 battles, I can't remember if DW1 had these but Re:Digitize does), techniques, item drops, and in general training causes exhaustion which you can mitigate by just battling.

DW1 also has way less annoyances than later games because Megas don't exist in it so there's less training and fighting you need to do overall.

here's a tip that will last you the whole game: Talk to Punimon in Jijimon's House to rest for an hour, this recovers some HP/MP and reduces fatigue (which builds up with training).
And the huge digivice in that same room? You can interact with it. Say yes and then say no to registering battle data to save normally. Otherwise you would only be able to save when going to sleep.

No, gym training will always better on DW 1 (and re:digitize decode) because fighting consume time. The reason you fight another digimon is to unlock certain ability for your own digimon.
People might disagree, but I prefer Next Order approach over the older games. You can still kicking digimon asses left and right while gaining decent number of stats. Pic rel is my first gen digimons.
