sad truth is that ww2 was an anomaly. there were four imperialist (japan, russia, germany, italy) that started the war, out of which three of them were closely comparable to the predominant western powers of the time (UK, US and France). In raw economic, population and military indicators. two of them had decently competent and intelligent officer core to effectively develop doctrine and lead the militaries (germany, japan) to maximize their inherent potential to the extreme. Which directly translated to the gigantic land/border flux all the way from 39 to 45. And truth is if it were not for the invulnerable mega factory, protected by the two largest oceans on earth, likely both of them would have succeeded in their predominant campaigns. For germany it was dominating the land war in europe and for japan it was dominating the far eatern pacific naval war.

It's very convenient for a small country to want to join the powerful western empire, this means that they themselves won't be targeted by the west through either direct aggression or their huge arsenal of destabilization tactics, and also means that they will potentially share in the west's imperialist looting of the global south through shit like EU aids. It's very convenient for these countries to claim that they are just doing this because russia is so evil they want protection from them, so parties pushing these narratives will obviously get popular, and ofc the shitloads of western funding of these groups also doesn't help.
