Engage's gameplay works the best it focus on the Emblem Rings. What chapters do fans praise the most? Chapters 11 and 17. If the Emblem Rings were useless, these chapters would not be praised because the loss of the Emblem Rings and the idea of a 6v6 Emblem fight mean anything is because how important they are to the gameplay.
What mechanic in 3H could be used for these kind of moments? Crests? Battalions? Nothing really has the weight of the Emblem Rings in combat so playing with the idea of having them or not and fighting against them or not doesn't really work.
Could you say "they can improve the mechanics/map design in 3H so players like it more"? Sure, but that's not Engage's gameplay. Engage's gameplay is the best when:

I just hate how the DLC in most FE games is not balanced with the base game in mind at all. FE is a very delicate balance of small numbers, even the slightest drop of overpowered stuff at an early point in the game can have rippling effects. And if it's not that, then it's 3H just having a really shit way to access it. Echoes DLC wasn't amazing, I haven't even played it, but I just prefer that template of having maps separate from the base game, new recruitable characters that aren't busted, and stuff like Overclasses that's only relevant after you beat the base game so the balance remains intact.

I don't think it's so much awful writing as it is disappointing writing. Like, you have this setup where they could've toyed with the morality of your actions or the actions of the various monarchs and really given you a deeply political, nationalistic Fire Emblem story. But instead it's exactly what it looks like: The good, virtuous, divine Japanese are being harassed by the evil, grim, megalomaniacal fallen dragon slaves, and its up to you as the player avatar to defeat him. The setup promised something more like the stories of older FE but they actually just made Awakening's story 3 times over and stuffed it with filler.

Fodlanshit already has more map variety than shartwakening although the same turn reinforcements leaves a very sour taste (looking at you Ingrid paralogue)

A single event, a single solitary event, whether it's the Tragedy of Duscur or the Massacre at Zanado, doesn't stop the rest of the world from turning. Almyra doesn't know and doesn't care about what happened in either of those events. Claude wins in his own routes because everyone else is so focused on bullshit that happened in the past they aren't planning for the future.

Claude is the only one to kill Nemesis not because he has the best route, but because he's the only lord that can most readily move on from the events that keep anchoring Fodlan in the past. Even Fodlan's inability to technologically advance is specifically because Rhea prohibits it out of fear that another Red Canyon would happen.

Revelation is actually a lot more bearable with that one balance patch which buffs up bases and prepromotes some of the later units like Nyx and the Nohr prince retainers.

You've just described the exact issue. The entire game revolves around events that happened in the past, that shaped these characters, the world, and set the stage for the future conflict. Claude is someone divorced from all of that. The strong emotional core that the Black Eagles and Blue Lions have is missing from the Golden Deer. You can try to come up with some thematic reasoning about moving on from the past but what does that even mean from someone who has no stakes in what's happening and no real connection to this conflict.

This makes sense because 3H is loosely inspired by Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where most of the drama in the plot happens between Wei and Shu.
The truth is TWSITD and Nemesis aren’t actually central to the emotional or ideological tension of Three Houses. Sure, they’re the catalyst for a lot of events, but they don't contribute much to the core themes like the morality of crests or the costs of war. That’s why Azure Moon still feels complete even though TWSITD are taken out in the background; the real story in the route is about tragedy, trauma, and healing.

I know they've played around with how the permadeath thing interacts with gameplay before, but locking entire characters and chapters behind murdering your units isn't really the most graceful solution.

Anon let's not pretend as if Claude killing Nemesis had anything to do with his character. Claude kills Nemesis because the story decides that Nemesis conveniently wakes up specifically when Claude wins, for no apparent reason. It's probably the most out of left field final boss of all the routes, and it doesn't even really make much thematic sense either. I have no idea why the devs didn't use Nemesis for the Church route and Berserk Rhea for Deer, given Nemesis is the source of Rhea's trauma and Claude is all about moving forward even if it means putting Rhea down.

The timeskip always bothered me. I really do find it hard to believe that no matter route you pick, the war still remains stuck and it's always 5 years regardless, no variation on time. And why 5 years? Why not just one year?

I also struggle to really think of how much the time skip really matters to make the story work. Sure it gives time for Rhea to be either imprisoned in Adrestia or seeking refuge in Faerghus. Sure it gives time for Dimitri to wander around as a fugitive, exhiled from his home country. But that's the only points I can think of, and I don't think you need 5 YEARS for that.

It really does feel like they added the timeskip and made it 5 years so then they can add romancing your students without making it feel weird.

Fodlan will be a pretty enduring setting since for all the areas where it's underwritten it has plenty of weird ideas to set it apart from most fantasy settings we see nowadays.
I also think it's really hilarious how Agartha became associated with rightoid schizo shitposting shortly after 3H's release. Like retroactively the Agarthans now feel almost like an allegory for the kind of wignats that cling onto worshipping Norse gods as a rejection of Christianity, which they think is a Jewish conspiracy. You could already draw a pretty clear parallel to Fodlan having its indigenous beliefs displaced by a literal alien religion to Christianity spreading in Europe but it's only gotten funnier with time.

You look at the Second Punic War where for a while Hannibal was stuck in Italy unable to capture any more major cities and the Romans were too weak to confront him directly and expel him. I kind of like how it characterizes each region a little bit. In most routes Edelgard takes half the Kingdom. But she has to rely on a lot of underhanded shit and compromise to do it. She had Dimitri framed for murder. She's knowingly allowing slavery in her lands. Thales owns Adrestian real estate.

The Kingdom is on the backfoot damn near every time. Because the Kingdom was already highly unstable before the war even started. But the ones loyal to the King are also really fucking stubborn so like 3 House Lords are able to stand against both the Empire and the other half of the Kingdom.

The Alliance are never on the same page. So Edelgard can't convince the Alliance to fight for her because they're too busy fighting each other.

Miklan stealing the Lance of Ruin isn't just some petty squabble, he was single-handedly about to bring down the entire Kingdom because without the Lance, Sylvain's father couldn't hold back Sreng. Sylvain trying to find new weaponry to hand to peasants and inventing "portable fire orbs" is because he knows once his father dies, he'll be the one responsible fighting back all of Sreng unless he can broker peace (which is nearly impossible, since Sreng is even worse off than Faerghus) or make it so even common infantry can hold them off without major casualties.
