well if you are a complete newbie I strongly suggest Bazzite
>without the needs to use launchers
launchers like Lutris and Heroic are somewhat necessary but they are there as a convenience to make it simple to install anything from official to pirated very easy, they arent bloat like Epic, EA, Ubisoft and similar launchers
people said that their gacha shit works with no issues with Heroic launcher

As the other anon pointed out, Bazzite is a good choice if you're mostly gaming with it. Another very beginner friendly distribution is ZorinOS, which works and looks fairly nice right out of the box.
Mint has always been a recommendation for beginners but I feel it's starting to get left behind recently

My main desktop will begrudgingly upgrade to Win 11 come October, but my old ThinkPad x220 laptop I use at my bedside will be moving to Linux.
I just haven't decided on a flavor yet, I was considering Bazzite despite not intending on using it for gaming, but some bedside emulation might be comfy.
Giving it a Win 7 Aero theme like OP would be extra comfy though, this thing was made to run Win 7.

It is for that and many other reasons. All accelerations done to Arch have been done by the Cachy team. Valve merges their changes and kernel mods into SteamOS. Cachy pulls obviously some SteamOS enhancements and enhances them further. You have one of the best maintained package repositories of ANY distro and if you want AUR is already added to repos by default. If you're using Arch, and if you're a gamer you are, it is literally the only sensible option. Even Bazzite does all its gaymen shit by taking the optimizations Cachy does. It is also the most popular distro right now which is both deserved and helps in deciding what to go with for level of support.

oh man...it comes with a fuckton of pre-installed ad applications like ClipChamp and similar shit, ton of MS included apps are also bloat that takes up space and resources
you are either very young or just that UNINFORMED but my suggestion is just to look up resource usage of regular Windows 11 vs Debloated Windows 11 and see for yourself how much of a resource hog it is
they have artificially locked it to not allow CPUs below 7th or 8th gen intel and 2nd gen ryzen
which are perfectly capable of running it and it was proven that they are, its just microsoft decided they dont want to add support for those

Otherwise sounds like you should just go full-linux honestly.

I wonder if I could make the full switch to Linux, because I still use a legit CD install of Adobe CS4 suite and it's what I know, but stuff like Krita is good.

Arch linux is a mess by default for sure. Mostly because of long standing performance issues they won't fix because it clashes with their "core philosophy" and how easy it is to break for end users. Driver issues aren't one of those issues. Distros like CachyOS, SteamOS, EndeavorOS and Manjaro are answers to the OS being complicated to get running. Cachy and Steam are the only ones that have done it flawlessly. CachyOS even supports DLSS on my 3090 out of the box. I didn't have to do shit, loaded in the proprietary drivers and everything was ready to rock and roll (other than clicking the install gaming shit button after installing the OS).

Bazzite is more idiot proof than Cachy. Look, if you're starting out, there's gonna be a lot to learn regardless of what you choose. Trying to pick the most efficient distribution possible for your use is impossible when you don't know anything about it.
Now it's a good time to take it slow, pick a beginner friendly distribution, throw it on a laptop or a desktop you don't use and see how you like it. The more you use it, the more you'll understand why people recommend certain things or not and you can always go back to Windows if you want.
