I don't want to learn a new thing right now. Look I'm sorry, that's just as straightforward as I can make it. This piece of shit I have works. Maybe your piece of shit is better, but I'll have to take the time to learn everything about it. And if that sounds fun to you great! No really that's wonderful I'm glad for anyone who thinks it sounds interesting and fun. It doesn't to me

lack of support
extra problems creep up that require me to spend time to diagnose that dont exist on pajeet-dows
nvidia drivers
>but you can fix those yourself!
i value my time, i could also rice my system to hell but it'd be a complete waste, gaming is a hobby i want to just werk or at most require me to install some dlls for mods and whatnot

pretty much the same things that have been problems for the last 2 decades

i'd love to swap over, being forced into windows specifically for gaming sucks ass, i'd prefer to not have one work/hobby coding and one gaming OS

valve should take their upteen gorillion dollars and really focus on steamos as a real operating system, not some fagshit for a subpar handheld

you know that this is a valid and fatal aspect to using linux. But when you mention the name of any unplayable game on /v/ you ALWAYS get the response like >>716353463 even if you personally like the game or you and your friends hangout at the game

Here is a fact /v/: Alot of popular normie games which people with a social life play work only on Windows. Your niche games are for only sweaty neckbeards such as yourself.

If Linux cannot play a game that Windows can, then Linux will NEVER be a gaming platform.

My GPU died a while back and at this point, I figure I may as well save up to buy an entirely new PC rather than just a new card.
So, in the meantime, I'm stuck with this cheap chromebook. After getting rid of all but the essentials, it can sorta run games on it, but only through linux with wine. I've been fed up with windows for years, so I guess I'll just stick with Linux at this point forward, especially since I'm investing so much time into learning how it works.
I enjoy using the terminal for everything, it's got that going for it at least.
And it doesn't come with built-in spyware.

Dude i don't know what to tell you, i installed a random distro my bro said is best, installed steam (by clicking a button, didn't open a terminal once) i logged into steam, pick a game i click on install, then i click "play" on steam and it starts. Literally had a problem once with one game and the only thing i had to do was install a "proton experimental" on steam. I don't even know what that is i just click buttons and games work.

You don't need to assume. I told you.
Here's a site tracking anti-cheat support:
https://areweanticheatyet.com/
I can't vouch for how up-to-date or accurate it is, but anti-cheat spyware compatibility is a known issue, so if the site doesn't say a game works then it probably doesn't work.
I'd tell you to look at ProtonDB as well, but that site is significantly more of a clusterfuck of inaccurate and outdated information and the rating system makes no sense, so the site is pointless unless you have the patience to read and understand the latest reports for a given game rather than trusting the useless rating.

Limited doesn't mean worse, I think simpler is a better word, because that would mean the scanner would be simpler as well.

The worst thing is that the lucky 38 that you can see shining from everywhere on the map (good design) didn't light up at all. Ruined my run and returned to windows for FNV. I installed Linux Mint and everything worked out of the box. Didn't have to go searching for printer drivers or pulling out my old TPLink CD for my wifi card. Ironically better than Windows. It even comes with a scanning program for my printer. On Windows I had to install a specific proprietary "hub" for my Canon printer to scan. It was a real fucking mess.

Problem is people think Linux is the same as it was 15 years ago. I remember trying it back then and nothing worked. Now almost everything works. If you want to run some windows-only program then just install Wine. And to my surprise it doesn't take 5 seconds to open a photo or file management. Idk how I dealt with that Windows lag for so long. An OS shouldn't lag ffs.

It's a bit harder to "use normally" because you have to google some bullshit, but they weirder you go, the easier it gets compared to windows.
Anything slightly different requires either some ancient Windows solution that only work half of the time, or a shady ass paid software that makes your machine slower.

First thing I do a fter getting a new PC is disable updates and the proceed to remove all this intrusive microsoft shit.
I had a $300 Lenovo as a college student. It ran faster and was much more stable than any of the four digit gaming notebooks my friends had, simply from not being force fed this crap.

There was some trial and error and I've bricked my machine twice but I've gotten pretty good at it. It's still a much more rewarding process than messing with a Linux distro. My current Laptop took me 30 minutes to "get in line" boots super fast and hasn't been updated in two years.

Windows use the RAM for file caching.
Check the "cached" number in the task manager to see how much.
If you actually need this RAM, windows will purge the cache completely and give it to you.

That shit made my last PC literally unusable. Windows anti-malware is literally malware.
The only way to stop it is to download an anti-virus.
But every single anti-virus is malware as well.
I tried bit defender but it made my PC turn back on every time I pressed shut down.

It generally has less (depends on the distro, I personally don't get any), but if you don't have the drive and critical thinking skills to change something "trivial" on Windows you'll have a bad time if you run into an actual issue on Linux. Also: updates on Linux are usually good, usually don't require a restart, and let you keep working while they go, so update notifs aren't all that bad.

I spent about a month of my life trying to install Linux because I fell for the meme. I tried Mint, Arch, Endeavor, and Cachy, yet none of them did what I wanted, which was gaming
I installed Mint on a laptop, and it couldn't even run the most basic shit that's available on Windows, which was finger gestures. All I wanted was to be able to seamlessly use the three finger gesture to switch between apps like on windows, and it was impossible
I tossed that experiment into the bin and counted as a fluke. Then I installed three Arch based distros, including Arch itself, and all I wanted to was to play Resonance of fucking Fate at a smooth fps, yet it was also impossible. I tried so many fucking launchers like Lutris, Hero, Wine, even went out of my way to make a Steam account yet it refused to get passed 20-30 fps. Mind you, I can run the game at full fps on windows
I made several threads asking for help, even joined a troon discord server to find assistance. Yet absolutely nobody could help me
From that point on, I marked Linux off as a shit OS and anyone who says otherwise is a coping faggot

Oh yeah? Do you know all the registry keys associated with everything you install? Because I don't and I had to figure that out more than once.
The registry is just a filesystem within another filesystem. On Linux everything that'd be in registry is in the normal filesystem and it's actually possible to remember where shit goes because the folders aren't totally random looking strings of numbers and letters.

Lutris have few couple of official installers supported, and download game from that.

Usually is just blizzard and rockstar shit. You can also use CD and just install, lutris give option to download patches and shit.

Otherwise is just setup exe parameters and play.

If you download manually
No you dont click double on exe. You click add new game in lutris, pick where you download installer, pick where is prefix. Done you can install now and then just change exe from install to game.
Everything like 7 clicks

you can do that on linux too. if wine is installed your file manager will run .exe when you double click it, and wine will automatically add the desktop files after the install is completed.
generally it's recommended to use a wrapper for wine because it doesn't include shit like dxvk by default, but it's not necessary if you have everything already setup or know what you're doing.

every game you launch through steam runs through a container runtime.
whether you launch a native game on steam through a steam runtime (scout, soldier, sniper) you are launching a debian container. you can disable it with a launch argument if you wanted to. if you launch through proton you are also running a debian container. its how steam games just work by providing a common runtime environment.

I want SteamOS to double as something I can use for general productivity. Once it has word processing, a browser, and some basic image editing I think I could switch. Using another Linux branch and having to constantly check for updates or compatibility seems like more of a hassle and I want SteamOS to standardize general Linux use. Until then, SteamOS can only do a little of what I can do with Windows or even MacOS.

Proton used to be disabled by default on Steam, don't know if it still is but if it's disabled in the options then Steam will not run anything that doesn't run native.

because conflating linux (the kernel, a single component out of an entire system) with windows (an entire operating system, plus microsoft's additional software) is a mistake
the problem with multiple people/groups working on the different components that make up a linux distro is things will break frequently, as there's a fuckton of hardware configurations that need to be tested

Bitdefender seems pretty good, I've used it for a while now and it seems reliable. Fairly low on resources too.

I value my time.
You're time is worthless so you can afford to spend hours getting your drivers and software correctly installed, hence why you're using Linux.

I have ever since radeon driver actually started beating fglrx.

>games that require a decent GPU
Still Windows since even directly writing to sysfs can't control as much as AMD Catalyst software on windows can. Which is stupid, since AMDGPU-DC harmonised most of the code between the Windows and Linux drivers outside usermode stuff that links to mesa on Linux and dwm/dxgi on Windows. Also the AMD control centre software is Qt6, there is no reason it shouldn't be ported to Linux, but until it is my big GPU will run under Windows.

this is the great cope Linuxfags tell themselves.
>nobody's complaining about linux when they use their android.
because linux for browsing the internet and watching youtube is just fine.
It's when you want to do anything more that it becomes a shitshow.
Gaming being the primary one.
But secondary is a bunch of programs that are refined and easy to use on windows that aren't even close on linux.

Actually, it is dumbfuck proof with SteamOS.
The problem is that it's not idiot-but-proud proof, the type of person who has no idea what they're doing, but might still reinstall Windows themselves.
The person who would never change OS or even think to look up how, Linux is fine for them.

All the drivers for my hardware are in the Linux kernel. So it comes pre-installed. Software installation is also quicker than windows.
Also funny that your saying how much you value your time when talking about playing Vidya of all things.

they probably wouldn't.
what matters is that it's included by the OEMs.
as long as gaming on linux was impossible, it was never gonna happen, but now that's changing and we are starting to see dell laptops coming with linux, and handhelds running steamOS.

Because they finally noticed the pot of water they're sitting in is getting too hot, and heard from a friend or random sperg online how (whatever distro) doesn't have the taskbar ads, forced updates, and feature bloat that they keep complaining about.
Were this topic 10 years ago, i'd have laughed at the linuxfags too, still comfortable on my win7 box.

Those retards truly think that emulating windows and running 6 compatibility layers on top of their games is better than running on bare metal Windows.
