>Why did they never bring them back?
because a dedicated ailment class just doesn't work in a game like this. if the aliments are good like eo2 they completely turn off the video game as long as you're willing to farm TP items and if they suck or easily wear off like eo1 then you essentially have a character that does nothing outside of a few free turns where the boss can't do anything useful (which means you just have a less reliable protector, basically).

etrian fixed hexer by making the aliment classes guys that do damage + aliment so even if the aliment fails you didn't literally waste your turn and 7th dragon fixed hexer by combining it with the buff class so you literally always have something useful to do + being a game entirely about fighting FOE so you're constantly fighting enemies that live long enough to justify aliment bullshit

I just really liked the Hexer girls design at least they could have used her design for some of the new classes or fixed hexers kit. Hexer also turned the last boss into joke in eo1 if you landed the evil eye + Suicide, boss would just beat himself up for you, aialments sure are fun. Necromancer's designs are also good in EO4.

What made me like the games (more than I did) was the epiphany that my goal in EO isn't to do big damage or kill things in an epic way, it's just to explore the dungeon. I started building teams for long TP economy and general mob clearing, as well as outright mob avoidance. The big hyper optimized damage builds receive all the discussion and attention but really all you're ever doing in these games is trying to find the next shortcut before warping out, saving, and going back in. The huge skill trees are a red herring in some ways. If I could avoid all random battles, I probably would.

Every class is viable (yes, even Farmer). Buccaneer isn't top tier but it has one of the big dick damage skills so it can more than hold its own. Its class skill also lets it spam skills more than any other class early on so it's actually one of the best at the beginning.

It combines mediocre combat with mediocre puzzle solving/exploration, and combining the two is not necessarily better.

Definitely look the skills up online before choosing cause some are bugged and you aren't told what you're actually investing in. It's not spoiling anything at all you still have to figure what's good and when by yourself. Skip 1+2 just play the updated Untold versions in my opinion unless you're an old school rpg fan. All these games had pocket lint for budgets EO is nearly a guerrilla project.

I think it'd be hard to surpass but there's still a lot of small ways the series could be improved. Things like map icons being clearer or having more obvious uses, respeccing and skill/talent descriptions, there's so much. If a skill costs more and does less damage, the player should know.

I like how flexible the game is and how many approaches there are, tanks and healers are optional, party size of maximum isn't always optimal, consumables are really strong but you never NEED to use them.
The game is easy to pickup and play but the skill ceiling is insane, from basic bitch tank and healer party to soloing superbosses and everything in between etrian's got it all.
Anonymous No.716398107
>>716396330

That reminds me about consumables, Etrian games are pretty unique in that they put enough consumables in chests between bosses that you can use your entire stock on 1 boss kill and still have some more by the time you have to fight another one, whether that's through unlocking new ones or getting more from chests. It's the RPG series that broke my healing item hoarding tendency.

It's a little easier than the other games in the series, but no so much easier that it's brainless, it's still a challenge.
Some people say "You can't go backwards in EO becasue you'll miss QoL features!!" but that's never bothered me. I went from 4 on 3DS to 1 on DS, wasn't an issue at all.

I just don't think it matters a ton, as long as you understand the pros and cons of starting with an older game. I started with EO4 not for any profound reason, but because I had a 3DS and I saw the big titty quest lady and I liked the aesthetics and there was a demo and that's that. Had it been some other EO, I'd have started with that instead, and probably still liked it.
4 is amazing, though, but it's not like I've had a bad time playing the other games. They're all pretty similar.

Mostly mechanical stuff from 3 onwards
>tight resource management between limited inventory and TP
>building your units up slowly with SP and having the tiered TP cost increase (i.e. at 4/8 and 8/8 points) as opposed to having it increase each level
>well balanced gear progression (namely the 3ds titles) where you can expect well paced upgrades over the course of the whole stratum, with anomalous large leaps in power from an FOE drop that will make whoever gets a weapon from it feel like a king for that stratum
>high (300%+) damage modifiers on skills so that the game doesn't make excessive use of the Attack command like 1, makes expending TP feel impactful
>class self synergy, shining example of which is Nexus Highlander with Delayed Charge activating Bloody Veil and allowing for a strong Spear Reversal next turn
>enemies with a variety of roles that make figuring out how much tp to spend and on which target an interesting puzzle for each different party you play through
>enemy synergy, like one enemy with a leg bind skill and another with a high damage multi hit that has low accuracy
>a secondary combat resource ala Limit/Force
>ailments being effective against bosses and worth using a party slot for
>whatever math the untold games and onwards had as opposed to weird shit like immunize in 1

1 has the most boring classes of the series (which Untold Classic does very little to fix) outside of Hexer and Dark Hunter. Everyone else is your stock standard RPG archetype and in fact all the best classes in the game fit into those. 3 or 4 should always be the starting point for newcomers because 1 will fail to capture the high points of the series that differentiate it from other drpgs (aside from presentation).

1HD if you are open minded and want to see the series evolve with each entry.
3HD if you want a more polished and refined entry point, it's the game where the series started to actually get a foot on their most recognizable features
4 if you want a more beginner friendly entry where it's pretty much impossible to make a bad party
1 Untold Classic if you're an actual psycho masochist
5 if you just want to jump into the best game in terms of dungeon design

2 is pretty much 1.5, it's better than 1 but it's still a bit rough
Do not start with 2U or Nexus.
Nexus is a celebeation of every EO game and 2U will suck the soul out of your body with how tedious bosses are if you don't know how to build an actually good team with synergy.

2U and 5 are the best ones, my favourite is 2U.

The English release is indeed a port of the original release which is missing extra content from the enhanced PS2 release, the devs said it was to help preserve the original and because porting the PS2 version would've been enough extra work to be outside their budget. It's a shame but it's a miracle it got translated in the first place given how long it is and how badly it bombed.
But yeah there are various character endings, some are only in the PS2 version but the PC/Switch version still has a lot of them and many optional party members. The requirements are very strict and esoteric though so good luck getting the one you want (eg. one character's ending requires you to dodge right rather than left when given an option at one point with zero indication of how this will be relevant). I see it as part of the charm but at the same time it's definitely going to be offputting to many people.

Can you elaborate a little more? I started etrian from EO1 HD and while it's pretty barebones I liked it, the start of the game makes you genuinely afraid of dying and losing your progress + you can draw your own map the way you want it to be. Every dungeon crawler should give the player the option to at least highlight interest points, eridanus' teleport maze from SMT strange journey would've been genuinely enjoyable if the game had map customization.
Etrian 2 was better in pretty much every way. Currently playing 3

I wonder what my party from 4 is doing right now after saving the world thrice over. I wonder if that Landsknecht and Bushi started to get along, or are still arguing over who's stronger. Did Sniper and Medic settle down or go their separate ways? I know Dancer definitely sold all her stuff to live hedonistic, especially that end game pin. I guess they all just became townies, living normal lives.

Classic party does not get access to the story dungeon so at some points of the progression most noticeably around 3rd stratum you are several levels lower where you're supposed to be and difficulty sharply increases.
EOU1 also has probably the hardest overall postgame in the series, claret hollows is literal hell.

This is a lie repeated often enough that people think it's true. The third stratum is just a difficulty spike in general. Gladsheim monsters give fuck all for exp and even the bosses are only about a quarter of a level, equivalent of a couple FOE kills.

Don't generalize a character. Focus on one thing.

Party comp is everything. Look for skills that synergize.

Keep extra warp items.

Sometimes (often times) people will make a "farm party" that exists to mine and collect food and shit. Good for cash but also shop inventory relies on you pulling in more shit.

Enemies will drop different items sometimes based on if a body part is.bound or if you hit a weakness. NPCs might give you hints, and you can check the bestiary. It becomes obvious: a monster with big claws or horns should probably be bound in their arms or head.
