The items in Deadlock are not more complicated than Dota at all. Dota has more items and fewer inventory slots, making builds significantly more variable and complex. A lot of items that aren't popular on particular heroes are still entirely usable on the majority of the cast. Part of that to me has to be because of the fact that Deadlock is 3D and has a third-person shooter camera, so similar concepts just aren't as good.

Items like Blink and BKB being so strong in Dota compared to their relative equivalent counterparts in Deadlock is part of my point. Sure, BKB is wildly important, but that's 1/6 of your readily-available slots as opposed to 1/12 in Deadlock. Deadlock also only lets you have a maximum of four active items, whereas you could theoretically have six in Dota. Dota's interface also allows for more complicated ways of using those items.

I will fully admit that Dota has simplified how its items interact with the rest of the mechanics of the game (remember orbs? not being able to buy vlad's and skadi without invalidating one or the other, etc.) compared to the wacky ass damage formulas for bullets and spirit in Deadlock. But the actual complexities of the items themselves and by extension builds aren't at Dota's level.

I think your 4000 hours and 20ish years of Dota are making you a bit blind. Deadlock is still an extremely young and fresh game, so general knowledge and understanding is just at an overall lower average level compared to what Dota has. Complete fucking noobs in Dota use Smoke of Deceit regularly now. I don't think I saw Smoke of Deceit properly used in my own games for the first 500 hours I played. While our understanding of what's good and what's not in Deadlock right now isn't great, I guarantee you by the time the game actually releases, even new players will be generally more accepting and understanding of how these things work. We don't currently have an intuitive understanding of it because the game is so radically different from others that it can be compared to. You eventually just develop a gut instinct for these things. You buy iron branches out the gate because they're the most efficient stat per gold you can get early game. You buy monster rounds for the same reason you buy quelling blade. You and I understand that after hundreds of hours, but in the future new players will "just do it" and intuit the understanding later.

as soon as they did this you saw the community change and I even noticed it within myself; suddenly losing became a big deal where it wasn't before, suddenly balancing was a big deal, suddenly matchmaking was a big deal, because all of these things affect your rank, and there's nothing worse than the game telling you "you are bad, rank down" because it put you in a fucked match where half of your team were useless and the enemies had the 2 most broken heroes of whatever patch you were playing on

you can't tell people "now you are only allowed to play competitively for status" and then act surprised when people start acting competitive and complaining about things that are being neglected which is affecting the ranking

the sad part about deadlock is that it will bomb real hard.
Not because the game is shit but because no one will want to actually play it enough to get good at it. Combining moba and movement shooters is simply a little too much for most people and valve drones will simply try it out for the sake of it and go back into their usual comfort games (cs2, dota2 and tf2).
Just like Artifact Valve will support it for a little while and quietly stop updating the game after a year or two.
All people want from valve is to update TF2 and release half life 3 but for whatever dumb fucking reason they simply refuse to.

The earliest I remember this type of context sensitive, conversation thing being done in a game is actually a different Valve title, Left 4 Dead. The survivors had conversations in the safe rooms before leaving based on who was alive and a little randomness so as to make it more interesting to replay the limited number of campaigns in the game. It became a standard thing in Valve games and then other big budget multiplayer games like Overwatch started doing it as well and it became a standard thing in a lot of multiplayer games with a budget large enough for a lot of voice acting.

They've said the next update is the biggest yet, won't come for awhile and that they will let people know when its coming. To me that makes it seem like they are trying to polish the game for open beta and actually do an ad push once they release it into open beta, thus the "we'll know when its coming". I dunno how familiar you are with Dota, but it seems like when they implemented Ability Draft, they moved away from making most aspects of heroes and abilities hardcoded, and instead focused on modularity. It's pretty cool to see that philosophy carry over directly to Deadlock.
