Game devs legitimately don't go outside anymore. Same goes for every aspect of the entertainment industry past 2010. The meta favors "creatives" who are hyperfocused on their "craft", thus never experiencing the real world, building real experiences and feeling real emotions. They are stuck in a perpetual cycle of creative circle jerking with their favorite, preexisting media. How can they replicate a vast horizon if the only horizon they know is a smog ridden hellscape? How can they capture raw emotion if the only emotion they know is the one expressed in movies and music? How can they possibly measure the feeling of venturing out into the wilderness if they can barely muster the courage to open the door to the food delivery jeet?

This is far more common than you think.

I loved the influence anime had on gen-x artist during y2k era. It's been almost 25 years but Keira's design is still timeless, hot, and stylish as I remember. The designer just wanted to make a cute hot elf girl for the bros and that was it.

Jak & Daxter is my least favorite of the PS2 trio solely because of the fact that it’s an inconsistent franchise and suffers from an identity crisis thanks to Jak 2 wanting desperately chase a trend.

You can’t really ask anyone β€œWhat’s Jak and Daxter about?” without it being a trick question unlike Ratchet & Clank or Sly Cooper that are both consistent and had a clear idea of what those series wanted to be.

>Ratchet: A cat alien and robot venture through planets blasting shit with an arsenal of purchasable weapons that earned by collecting bolts.

>Sly: A raccoon thief and his gang of anime crime buddies go on heists with stealth based platforming and perform various missions/tasks that outsmart villains.

>Jak: uh…well it’s about an elf boy and his sidekick that go adventures I guess?the first is kinda like a open world crash bandicoot/mario 64 platformer but then the second game goes full edge in copying gta with guns and then the third game is more like mad max with racing…?

Jak desperately needs a reboot if it comes back, just to have an identity.

Hayao Miyazaki was writing journal essays about this in the 1980s. Basically said all Japanese animators want to draw giant robots and copy each other, no one studies real machines or nature. He says animators should be studying history and the real world more and stop reading manga for inspiration.

Same problems in the games industry, but multiplied tenfold because of pinterest and google and artstation and a library of videos of every game ever made to study.

Nintendo still makes these types of games. Unfortunately, if you want to play them, you'd have to buy Nintendo. As for everyone else, I think they don't make these games because gamers back then were desperately trying to shake the idea that games were for kids and they wanted people to take them seriously. Every studio pivoted to more "mature" looking games in response.

Generally old 5th gen games took a real life photo (usually from a popular texture cd set) and just downsampeled it. PS1 did no filtering (raw pixels), while the n64 did trilinear filters (basically modern filtering but slightly less accurate)
