I recently 100%'ed witcher 1, and it sucks how it's entire main story just feels like total inane nonsense. I actually hope they rewrite it completely if they remake it.

Triss and Alvin are this weird reimagining of Ciri and Yen from the books for some reason, and the game doesn't know if it's a remake, sequel to the books, or reimagining of the books story but in a alternate universe. It's bizarre and incoherent. I'm glad Witcher 2 sorta just ignores it all because none of it makes any sense. Salamanda also kinda suck, Azar Javad is a truly boring villain. The quests suck and while you will initially try to force yourself to enjoy the "vgh sovlful jank sovl" of the combat, 5 minutes later you'll be sick of how shit the combat is.

The atmosphere is top notch, I think W2 and W3 rarely ever nail the atmosphere of the Witcher as well as the first game does. And lots of individual arcs and stuff like the Vizima connection is great, but in total it's just a fucking MESS and I truly cannot fathom how people can call it the best in the trlogy.

It is bullshit, but it forces you to actually research what you're going up against and utilize alchemy, whereas it's pointless otherwise. You're not gonna enjoy Witcher if you aren't the kind of person to accept the bullshit and outplay it anyway.

A game with decent writing (sometimes verging on cringe) with woefully outdated systems. Combat is a slog, menus are annoying, and you walk at a snails pace.

Only played 3 but watched a lot of vids about it. The conclusion I arrived at is that it's a very ambitious game with very little resources to realise it. Also it's dated and that could be a deal breaker. Otherwise it's an old rpg that does what old rpgs do. 3 seems like the culmination of the studio's vision for a witcher game. 2 is good so I heard and has meaningful choices but clanky combat. Have fun!

2 has the best combat because long rolls, parrying, and signs are all restricted to the same resource, vigor, and the more vigor you burn up, the less sword damage you do. That means you have to actually git gud, use potions, use bombs, use traps, use positioning, and conserve vigor instead of treating it like a rollslop game. Witcher 2's combat is the ultimate pleb filter because it punishes you for being a shitty and doesn't let you bullshit the system.

1. Remember that the combat is turn based, and the engine and design choices obfuscate this somewhat. It's really just neverwinter nights 2 with a Witcher game on top.
2. It was built with late 90s/early 00s CRPG design logic, so don't be afraid to use a guide if you aren't used to those.
