Tariffs cannot simultaneously be a negotiation tactic to get better deals, and a way to reshore manufacturing.
The tariffs were calculated based on trade imbalances, which makes no sense. The US is not screwed by Vietnam because we buy their t-shirt, but they can't afford the same amount of jet turbines or medical imagine machines. Even at the reduced rates, these trade deals are nonetheless worse for the American consumer than what existed prior to April.
As it is, Trump fucked the bond market (American debt being low-risk is important for the value of the USD and keeping inflation abroad), boxed the Fed into an impossible macro situation between tariffs and the increasing deficit. Complete disaster.
