Directors just aren't in the position to decry a translation even if it's bad. It requires a non-native english speaker to argue with native english speakers, Japanese culture already incentivises not rocking the boat, the time and effort it would take to do text comparisons is insane. That last one especially. I've made threads with limited scope and broadly going over text difference and ended up writing essays. Doing that in depth for an entire game would take a year easily. Translation is only hard if you're taking it seriously. It's extremely easy to make shit up and get away with it.

An example is the battle with Ifrit. イフリート討伐戦 is Ifrit Extermination Battle when put through google translate, and I think Bowl of Embers is a far better title for it. This is something repeated throughout a lot of the trials.

Not really sure why you'd compare the official with MTL. MTL can be accurate but not always. Are you under the assumption that MTL is "literal" or "1:1"? Because that doesn't exist. Words don't have equivalents they have overlap. Which is why you can put 討伐 in a JP->EN dictionary and get suppression or subjugation instead of extermination. And I'm pretty sure there are viable translations like "Ifrit's subjugation" "subjugation of Ifrit" or whatever. Which probably sound better than the MTL while also being more accurate than "bowl of embers".

Usually that's just the original script's quality still coming through in spite of being butchered. I don't know why this is a hard concept to grasp but the original writer has way more freedom to write than the translators. So whereas the original writer can make drastic changes at will, the translator has tons of shit that is already set in stone. This is an FF14 thread and FF14 is a really good example of this. The EN script repeatably conflates the echo with Hydaelyn and eventually has to basically do a sudden retcon after a while. Because if the JP writers intent something, you can't diverge too much without contradictions. Any change you make will create friction with the rest of the script and managing all of that friction is harder and less productive than just translating accurately. More often than not.

At that point you're probably better off just taking each character and putting it in a dictionary. MTL doesn't translate you know. They use machine learning, it's not understanding the words it's giving you an output.
