IMO they've improved on it a bit in recent years. The big killer with FGO in terms of fun is that it's a game about building synergistic teams except it's also a gacha so your access to units is a drip feed. It makes the early game not very fun.

In the past few years they've started giving new players a free 5*, buffing free/low rarity servants to have more unique skills and effects, as well as making welfares from past events permanently accessible, and that goes a fairly long way to actually giving you unit variety early on, which directly does make the game more fun.

Obviously this is assuming you don't just fundamentally find the gameplay itself unfun, in which case yeah, fair enough.

The OVA just kinda meanders its way to a disappointing finale. Jungle de Ikou's a whole lot of nothing pieced together with cool character designs and decent animation. Despite everything, I still like it. It's just a shame the writing's so awful.

The issue's that the narrative sucks and its boring. If the story and characters are gonna be so barebones, then it needs to have at least 1 thing that's really working in its favor. Take Agent Aika, for example. It's barebones but does action really well (its made by the Project A-Ko guy, after all) and is filled to the brim with panty shot fanservice. JDI's also barebones, but it doesn't really do anything in particular all that well, and aside from episode 3, it doesn't even have that much fanservice relative to its runtime.
