I dropped Wukong after the first boss, Lies of P at the quarter mark, but I finished all fromsoft games. I guess I liked Nioh 1 and 2, and some of the 2d games like Blasphemous, Nine Sols and Salt and Sanctuary.

This should be obvious to any older gamer looking at the combat but nowadays we have people that will call absolutely any kind of action game a "soulslike", so long as it has a lock-on and respawing enemies via checkpoint. As somebody that like both action RPGs (including From's games) and pure "hack n slash" games, I still hate how people view "soulslike" as a genre.

Looks more bamham and sekiro/from to me because protagonist attacks and movements seem really focused on 1v1 combat, whereas action games like MGR and ps2 action games the player character usually have a good degree of AoE to their moves and attacks that can sweep up several enemies at the same time.

I think some of you guys need to go back and watch some combat footage of DaS1 and DeS. Combat pacing and aggression is completely different and you're not imputing face button combos either. I really think the main thing is just the lock-on at this point, if the game has a lock-on then it's going to be called "soulslike" no matter what. It absolutely does look adjacent and like it does take some influence from From's games but this is looks like it's leaning more towards fast paced aggressive combat. Sekiro or BB would be a somewhat closer comparison but definitely not DeS, DaS1-3, or ER.

Looks cool. I'm glad that the combat animation is just as intense as the initial trailer.
What hypes me up more than anything is that the movement is fluid, yet has certain weight to it. This is something that all three Dark Souls games and Warframe lack, despite having a big melee focus, still feel floaty.
Another good thing is the hitstop, the hitstop duration is perfectly adjusted. A very split second and just a tiny bit longer for heavy attacks/blocks, this keeps the combat smooth. Space Marine 2 suffers from hitstops being too long.
Still don't like how weapons cleave/phase through targets in modern melee, but I guess considering the genre, it's not something too important.

I don't mean the "speed", rather, the minute details of acceleration/deceleration and mastery in animation blending all played together. In OP's video, the character leans a bit towards their running direction, which adds a lot of "sense" into animation, whereas in DS1, I don't know how to articulate it, but the character is like an animation render placed in the world, turning corners looks very weird.

Combat looks to be a similar situation as Nioh or Khazan. It's an action RPG that takes some influence from From's games but has faster paced combat that's more rooted in older hack n slash action games. So having different combo paths via heavy/light is one thing that I see. I still love DoD and I'm hoping for a port. But yeah, this is one reason why I never considered "soulslike" a genre and this is coming from somebody that loves From's modern games. There was nothing wrong at first when people started using "soulslike" to simply describe a game that's like DeS or DaS, but the way people have started to view it as a genre is simply annoying. From did not invent a lot of what they did, they simply made a cool action RPG that was heavily rooted in dungeon crawling. Other action game devs took note of some design choices they made which is great but From really didn't do anything unique enough to create a genre. I remember there being interviews where Miyazaki himself was confused and didn't think they made a genre but that was a long time ago and I don't know if his views on that has changed at all.

Now that I'm revisiting old tutorial vids, the yellow bar is called "Sha-Chi". Most special actions (combos, secondary cannon/bow charge, concentrate mode, etc.) use it.
This bar seems to have a "buffer" behind it which can be recovered with perfect parries. While Shadow Step is another different input combination to avoid killer moves.

The way camera, attacks and weapon handling works is very specifically drawn from Souls games, yes. On the contrary, if the game was inspired by DMC, like the dev claimed, lock on/soft lock on would be decoupled from a free floating camera, like it is in actual DMC/Ninja Gaiden game, where attacks specifically are largely reliant on lock on instead of it being an optional mechanic to autotune camera orientation.

Deathblows are essentially just Obliteration Techniques from NG with a slightly different nuance. The exact way this sha-chi system works will likely have it's own nuance compared to Sekiro's poise. We don't know how many cut-scenes the game will have and what kind of development the MC will or won't have. We do know it's a fixed guy with a name though and not a character creator. Stuff like weapon switching and item switching is superficial, who cares if it's on the d-pad like Souls. If you're going to count that as significant then you should count that the game has face button square/triangle attacks as significant as well. And really anon, ladders? Did From now invent ladders and shortcuts as well? Have you ever played a first person dungeon crawler before? Despite all this, the game absolutely does take some influence from From's games, I won't deny that, but it looks like it has a lot of other influences going on as well.

I agree with this, "genres" should just be broad categorizations. I hate the idea that games are "formulas". You make a game and you look at things you like from a variety of different games but the end result shouldn't be something that's exactly like the other games down to every tiny detail. By that definition, the game doesn't have Styles selection like DMC at all, rather, combos are tied to the weapons which can be chained like DMC. This makes perfect sense to me, considering that other anons have already mentioned the game was inspired by many different things, including DMC weapon switching combos, only a small part of DMC, I agree.

This actually heavily reminds me of Wo Long Fallen Dynasty from a glance. The combat seems to have the same flow where you parry parry parry a combo then do some attacks/magic (I dunno if there will be some resource that you build up by parrying that you then use to power up attacks) then the enemy glows red and you parry their super attack, then you break their posture and do a combo/finisher, repeat.
It does seem to have a much higher budget and every boss super attack seems to have a unique parry animation if you parry it as opposed to just 2-3 generic ones and it looks much cleaner in general.
Could be fun. I liked Wo Long and if it's just the same game but better then I'm all for it. But it's definitely a souls-like or souls-lite or nioh-like, whatever you want to call it. Not really a classic PS2-3 era action game.

It's actually inspired by MGR. Sekiro doesn't have dial-a-combo >>716499747 - no Souls game does. DMC doesn't do that either.

It's predominately Platinum and Ninja Gaiden thing. And seeing all the parries that move you to the side (like MGR's Defensive Offense), non-aerial combat, QTE stealth takedowns, QTE low HP executions AND the camera position, it's safe to say that it's taking notes from MGR first and foremost.

I looked over the video again and he doesn't get hit much but I see what you mean. But looking at the other video I posted, you can see the guy get hit more and he comes close to dying. There definitely is difficulty modes and we don't know what difficulty the OP video is on. From what I can tell, it looks like a game where enemies will do smaller hits to you and whittle you down more. So if you're fighting a group, each individual hit may not do tons of damage but the faster enemies will be able to hit you more often if you're not good and it'll quickly add up. But I'm sure there's going to be stronger hits that do huge chunks of damage as well but I don't feel like digging through all the footage right now.
