You could make a game where the world is comprised of linear hallways stretching between hubs.
Hubs being taverns and respites, and the hallways being open road or wilderness between those break points.
In the hallways you deal with obstacles, combat enemies, and collect loot - then in the hubs you receive quests, trade and refine equipment, speak to NPCs, and choose one of four hallways to navigate down next.

Not claiming you could build a *good* game from this, the combat would probably need to be 'sprite wiggling around a fixed perspective' levels of rudimentary, but you definitely could make the concept function despite its limitations.

I don't think it's really the pixel art that makes this AI piece resonate with people. It's that the general art style espouses classic fantasy paintings and utilizes traditional image composition to give a huge sense of scale.

The sad reality is that modern PBR games have a lot of trouble with lighting and contrast. Everything looks washed out, foggy, and equally dense with detail. The images look closer to photographs of mundane mountains, than fantastic worlds to explore.

It’s not going to be AI doing everything from scratch. At least not for quite a while. Before then you’ll get basic procedural 3d geometry/textures that defines the game world and basic objects and then you’ll drape AI generated visuals generated from that geometry over it like a shaders. what it's depicting, and what you believe would require a human mind to imagine, is extremely well documented, it's insanely well documented, it's something AI can be very easily trained to reach, which is exactly what happened here, this wasn't the result of an artist first laying out any geometry or anything else past text prompts and feeding the software images they wanted to use as examples

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but rather, that you're only right right now, yes, right now if you wanted to get these results with AI, a human would first have to intervene and provide a fair chunk of the work before letting the AI loose on it, but I'm specifically saying 5 to 10 years because by then, AI will most likely be robust enough that it'll be able to provide that work itself on its own and the human hand would only be needed to touch and adjust and edit a la 'post production', if you will
