I would say closer to Arkane's Prey than SS2, I get massive Talos 1 vibes from this game based on how progression through areas works (everything eventually will lead back to the lobby).

Almost the entire game, from the combat roles to the jobs/skill system, and the base building aspects are all built with the idea of playing in a group. You can play by yourself and have fun but I dunno a majority of the experience is sharing it with friends. Otherwise you're just grinding away gathering materials for buildings and gear you won't ever use. You can probably just progress through the whole game with shit you find in crates and never make a base at all.

I mean, robots drop 3-5 sodas each. Plenty of water everywhere you go especially if you aren't using it to cook. There are shitloads of dollars around from peoples inventories to random cabinets and whatnot so you can just buy snacks or even shake the machines for infinite food. You're also absolutely fucking DROWNING in rad pills so it's not like radiation is ever an issue unless you're swimming naked in the radiation goop in manufacturing.

I don't see it, I think the abundance of money and rad pills is precisely because of basing and cooking leaves you with little use for them. If you try only grilling meat at the start you realize how little hunger they actually give, which leads you to start farming for a more reliable food source. Snacks give even less than that so you'll need to spend a lot just to stay fed, and shaking is a tremendous waste of time if you even manage to reach the strength requirement at all.

All this doesn't even matter anyway because literally everything besides shit like bandages needs a crafting bench so unless you want to be bogged down carrying one around everywhere you'll have to set it up somewhere.

It is a balance. If you aren't picking up new things, you will miss a lot. Only found my way through a couple areas because I was following the breadcrumbs of unlooted crap lying around.
On the other hand, by the end of the game I had huge amounts of many materials to the point where I had medium chests of just one or two types of item and my game lagged pretty hard when using the item pad.
If only I was a guncuck I would've had a use for all that paper and metal scrap.

Normal settings are fine.
Most of the game combat is going to be easy outside of a few areas, so it is a tough call whether to amp the difficulty there a bit, but if you don't want to be relaxed, be ready to slam your head against a wall a bit when you reach certain zones.
I don't remember if there are achievements for leveling skills, but in regular play you do not need to max every skill, so I wouldn't turn the xp rate up unless you really love to see numbers stop going up.
Spoilage and survival meter rates are more of a tedium than a challenge, so changing them won't matter.

the in game VOIP also sucks ass, its immersive but also really hard to hear people nearby and over the radio. you unfortunately get a smoother experience resorting to discord
if the 4 of you arent always online at the same time you'll probably not want to progress the exploration with the missing members, as that's kinda the main appeal of the game, which can lead to the game taking much longer than it normally would

I got to labs. I can see why people like setting up above the Aquarium.
I set up a new main base there. A small bridge over the railing that leads to the aquarium for fishing and water, an escape rope down the railing, with a jump pad back up, and on the outside window that leads straight to the cart parking spot. A toilet on a bridge outside the other window so I can shit on the Leyak whenever it putters over. A nice overview of where the security bot is, occasionally getting to watch it carry some poor Order soldier to Gay Baby Jail. Max comfy.

Started Reactors tonight. It's so fucking big. the Cloud reactor was a nightmare with all the fucking enemies, the only actual difficult area so far. Feel like I need an armor upgrade after that. The back and forth making those green things to repair the reactors has been annoying. But only one reactor left now.

I was on edge the entire time I was going through the Night Realm because I thought the shades would "activate" and start attacking. I also didn't realize that the Reaper could bring you there, as I kept enraging it with the Xray lamp for more nightmare orbs. Kinda lame.

Its because Canaan was originally an optional side world but they made it necessary for progression, and also one of its 2 major resources, Lodestones, drops by the bucketload from every fucking enemy in Reactors
Still plenty of neat stuff from it, but its really underwhelming as a main portal world
