Because modern devs don't want to make games-they want to make platforms. Every good game nowadays gets patchworked into a quasi-live service with battle passes, cosmetics, useless social features, and accessibility sliders for people who don't even like games. It's not even about zoomers specifically-it's about steering everything toward marketable mediocrity that offends nobody and excites no one.

Its an industry wide problem that there is very little actual talent in game development.

Unless you have a really smart, dedicated group who is going to shepard their game to greatness without selling out, you're eventually going to end up wtih investors and publishers buying up any IP of value, and replacing all the people worth a fuck with blue haired troons with 4 year degrees in gamemaker studio.

Its why minecraft was stagnant, once Notch left the developers were stuck porting the game to everything microsoft wanted it on and making bedrock edition, leaving the actual game development to a bunch of interns, which is why for a decade we got like 5 blocks and 2 new mobs until relatively recently when they started doing real updates again

Notch used to talk about making bigger NPC towns woth proper quests and shit in them, which had positive feedback at the time but never went anywhere (aside from a few cool mods I suppose).
If that had come to fruition, /v/ would definitely hate it as much or more than the current trajectory of updates. Although I also heavily dislike the biome and mob bloat of newer updates.
