I'm genuinely curious as to why id began to double down on fellating Doomguy with Eternal onward. 2016 kept it simple, which is arguably the best way to keep things for a Doom game. Even Doom 3 made it a pseudo horror game that was pretty straight forward in delivery and execution. Eternal onwards wanted to lean into the memes around the Doom guy while failing to understand that he stood out so well because the narrative of 2016 worked as well as it did. He doesn't give a shit about argent energy or power shortages or demonic cults controlling mega corporations. He kills demons, and finds new ways to kill those demons. Everything else it secondary to that.

The context matters here though. Gordon is a theoretical physicist and aside from the hazard course, was never expecting to have to fight for his life. Likewise much of his personality is only inferred from the dialogue of other characters. It's more reasonable to think he's not as hyped up to go killing as the Doom guy is for demons.

Half-Life fans also more or less already saw the Gordon wank in HL2 at that point. In the original, he is shooting through a giant lab complex in trying to survive and later trying to get to the root of the problem and perceptibly set things right, but then in the sequel he's praised as a heroic figure by the remnants of humanity and even the Vortigaunts, from the beginning to the end Gordon gets a lot of it as some sort of messianic figure. Maybe it was kind of cute with how much of a wait there was for a sequel at the time, but there's still a good amount of tonal whiplash that was probably made more apparent later as id doubled down with Doomguy.

Though around the same time you also got Ranger now canonically characterized as a guy struggling with his humanity in Quack Hampions, so I guess there's some actual development there - albeit still based on Q3 bot lines presumably given to the wrong skin (Wrack).
