I always wrote this game off for it being a gacha game, but I tried it out after an anon here told me that the microtransaction shit was completely optional for playing the game. And honestly, he was right. It's a massive in-depth JRPG that's entirely for free because of autists whaling on microtransactions.
I'm not too far into the game yet, I've only just finished up with Liyue (Act 1, Chapter 2). Sorry about the pic, I don't take a lot of screenshots so this was the best one I had.

that is mostly true, but there are a few parts of the that do violate the whole "gacha is optional" aspect.
spiral abyss usually demands specific well-built teams that can defeat rather tanky time trials. often the enemies selected to be in here are rather gimmicky, heavily stalling the fight unless you are running a team that interacts with the gimmick.
imaginarium theatre requires a large quantity of competently (but not perfectly) built characters of every element. a whoooole bunch of them. however, the difficulty for this content is pretty lenient.
stygian onslaught is basically spiral abyss on steroids, with you also needing to be able to clear 3 fights with 3 separate teams instead of 2.
thankfully, none of these modes really constitute as meaningful content, except maybe imaginarium theatre. it has by far the most love put into it as it has unique reactions, new mechanics to play with, and a lot of flair put into the UI.

I’m in a similar situation to you. I read about this game before it released and people were calling it a BoTW clone. I didn’t understand gacha back then too and I thought it was retarded that you had to gamble to get characters instead of just recruiting them. But then I tried this and also other ones like HSR and WuWa and I get it now. It’s free but whales (big spenders) end up buying the game for you. That’s why gachas are more profitable than regular games. It’s also why they have such a high install rate too because it’s free. You can’t be a completionist in these kinds of games but it’s okay you can still draw and get some good characters and you can get through the story for free. Stamina mechanics suck when they timegate you but these games aren’t as bad as gachas from the old days before the Hoyoverse model was a thing. I tried mmo’s as well and although they’ve gotten better with technology I don’t like the subscription model whereas with gacha it’s free for me. With an mmo sure the monthly payment isn’t much but I’m a jew when it comes to spending my money, and I would end up playing it 10 hrs/day to get my money’s worth whereas with gacha I just do the dailies and only play a lot when new content comes out.

Dont worry i was like you, the game is really solid because you have years of content when the game was really good so you have a MASSIVE world to explore right from the start, the game is still really solid all across the next region inazuma(japan) and all its updates up until the chasm which was a liyue update
As soon as you start sumeru(the region after japan) you will understand why the game started to die, and when you reach natlan(last region), the literal third world region based on america you will lose interest in it and you will understand why the game lost half of its playerbase and why they keep losing money

My advice is to enjoy it while it last, you still have like 100 hours of fun gameplay until it starts shitting the bed.

As someone who actually played Genshin and quit at Sumeru (I actually got bored with the game long before that but kept playing due to it becoming a routine), I'd say the game is pretty boring.
It has a huge world but nothing interesting to do in it
It lacks any meaningful challenge
It has really bad writing and the story is told in the most atrocious way imaginable - long boring info dumps and characters just standing there and talking with occasional fade to black screen informing you that "character X did something". Sometimes there is a cool cutscene.
It's basically no different from an open world ubisoft game that's perpetually unfinished due to its GaaS nature

Genshin Impact was boring to play. I prefer having sex with Mona through debt and entrapment in my lucid dreams.

TL;DR: The summer event is actually a permanent addition as the last part of Natlan.
Throughout Natlan, you can transform into various creatures by hitting a button while aiming at them/markers left behind when they die/in fixed places throughout the region. These all have mobility mechanics of one form or another (infinite swim, grapple hook, speed-digging, flight, etc.).
In the summer event area, instead of an animal, it's the equivalent of Seelie if it were made of liquid mercury, which lets you do.. basically everything exploration-wise (super-jump, walk on water, run super fast, float for a long time) and also spits paint, which becomes a major mechanic for the puzzles.
And that is the literal tip of the iceberg, cause you get access to these dudes in the first 5 minutes.

Had the same thing happen in /mlp/ where as seasons progressed, the world-building took a nosedive and instead of trying to fashion some clever way to make our things work in a world of characters with no hands or fingers, they just started using regular modern items in ways that broke their bones.
After the show ended, all the production materials leaked and the staff was revealed to care a lot about these details, but had to cut them as it takes time and they were running a ridiculously tight schedule to push a new season each year.

Genshin is almost assuredly in the exact same spot, just for a game. They are running the fastest-developed game in human history, it is absolutely staggering how much content they are pushing with superbly predictable schedules, having missed a SINGLE, literally just a SINGLE deadline during the height of covid. They also put the entire game industry to shame with just how few bugs there are despite sprinting non-stop for almost 5 years.
Something has to ultimately give and throwing random garbage into the world without trying to tie it into the existing rules of Teyvat is going to be one of them. There is no option to go "Hey Da Wei, we need another month to design some mudhut-ified DJ tables and record discs to fit the rest of the world. Can we stretch this patch another few weeks?" No, they'll just throw in normal vinyl records and players and eat some shit from the playerbase. Better people complaining the game stopped giving a fuck about its world than complaining they are dying of boredom and have to play something else for another month of no content + the next area compensating for the extra month in front with some shorter patches or shit that puts the strain elsewhere.

To put it another way, Natlan is fucking covered in ancient precursor tech. The Natlanese have lived alongside that tech for two thousand years and there's also a bit of documentation on how to use them and how they work. On top of that, at least on of those ancient dragons actually taught one of the humans how to use it as well, and some of their work managed to survive to the present day. But the problem lies in the engines. Sure, the Natlanese know how the tech works, they haven't managed to reverse-engineer the dragons' energy conversion methods. So in order for Xilonen to create the engine for Mavuika's bike, Mavuika had to find an engine in some dragon ruins. Xilonen took that engine and modified it. Same for most of the parts for the bike.
