One of the things I really liked about BBS is how the playstyles of the characters is so different, especially at the start of the game when they are underleveled on the higher difficulty modes.
In DDD for example there is barely any difference between how Sora and Riku are played, they have some exclusive commands and different Dream Eater combinations but that's it.

Kingdom Hearts needs more magic-style characters like Aqua.

I wish they'd bring back KH1's magic system. The way MP worked in that game made combat dynamic and magic viable. BBS's system, while allowing pure magic builds, doesn't integrate it well with combat. And while I hate the way MP worked in KH2, and I like how magic could be strung together in combos and each spell had its own finisher version. There's an ideal magic system melding the good parts of all styles, but KH4 looks like more of 3 which was the worst magic system of all the games.

The point is for the two systems to work together instead of being separate. I don't see why it even matters that Drive forms have different spells. They're all stronger forms of magic than the base ones layered on top of the spell upgrades. It's not solely an MP refill. If you're going for a more magic oriented playstyle, you're obviously not going to use Valor for the combat, so until you unlock Wisdom it essentially acts as an extra MP bar since you can just revert whenever. Antiform is the only real issue and it's designed to be a nuisance regardless of your playstyle.

You could but that's not the point. I don't know why KH1 magic fags are so unwilling to admit that magic was too good. The point of reworking magic was independent of Drive existing, and Drive adds on to the rework. It's an RPG, the new systems encourage good resource management whereas previously you can just unload all your strongest magic and then get it back easily for playing the game. There's barely any pressure that you'll be without your strong magic unless you're on Lv1 and have a tiny MP gauge the whole time.

Fire is the close range combo extension magic, Blizzard is a long range piercing magic, Thunder is a launcher, Magnet is crowd control, and Reflect is a 360 shield (and this is all only for the base versions). Meanwhile in KH1 it's a homing shot, a shotgun blast that obsoletes your other magic until Gravity, a random AoE that costs too much, a damage reducing shield that can automatically deflect attacks, a fixed damage field, and a time stop. Blizzard is far and away your best magic for its cost and there's rarely a reason to use the other basic magic outside of rare cases of element resistance. Stop+Gravity is an absurd combo to have exist and once you do it's the best way to deal with any tanky enemies, up to and including some bosses that don't resist it. Sure, if you're comparing 2 to 1, magic seems useless in comparison, 1 magic trivializes a lot of encounters. In the context of 2, magic has plenty of utility for different scenarios, rather than just progressively getting a new best spell to use on every enemy.

As an aside, I would like to see something of the Days system adapted to a newer game. Every tier of spell has a completely different function and can be powered up individually so the higher tiers aren't automatically better versions that replace others. The limited uses might not work as well outside of mission-based gameplay, but I would like to see the variety Days had again. Unlike 3 which just made every magic besides Thunder a different flavor of homing projectile. What a joke.

Magnet+Thunder is still extremely strong in KH2, especially when you stack thunder boost equipment towards the end of the game. Master Form Thundaga is also just the best version of Thundaga among any of the forms.

The thing with KH2 is that all of the magic in that game was balanced around the melee combat system. You're supposed to be using magic during melee rather than sniping enemies with magic. This was pretty obviously the intention when you realize that magic in KH2 continues your melee combo rather than interrupting it.

KH3 missed the memo though and brought back low-cost ranged magic, hence why on any difficulty that isn't Critical. you can literally just spam Firaga from a safe distance and break the game balance.

I just think it’s a letdown that 2 removed elemental immunities. Maybe their logic was so that combos involving spells wouldn’t be interrupted, but it really doesn’t feel that consequential when using the “wrong” element gives you a small damage reduction at worst. It removes a layer of strategy from the game, and is one of many reasons 2 was criticised for being too easy upon release.
