The end-goal is to have developed character designs that can be modeled, textured, rigged and rendered for public use at a later date.

Yes. I want to know that people here can still feel passionate enough about something to put in a measure of effort. Collaboration is good for the soul.

If you're not confident in your ability for any one particular practice as part of this process; you can still provide support in other ways and contribute in what you can if the need is there.

>How do I start?
We'll begin by focusing on either providing detailed descriptions or to sketch out our own respective character designs.
I'd reccommend keeping things simple to start out with.
If you absolutely struggle visualizing a design, you can also submit stuff made with the assistance of AI. I won't demonize you for it. We're just trying to get ideas put forward at this stage.

When we've reached a satisfactory design, we can move on to working on a basic character sheet.

I’m not gonna tell you how to do things, results are results. But pros do sculpt -> retopo because it is most efficient (+ you get a bump map from the work). If you are a newbie, starting on the optimal routes will save you time and effort.

It’s much less work than box modelling and much more powerful. Look up a guy called speedchar on youtube and look what you can sculpt in 30-60 minutes.

You can sculpt in low poly. Just keep the resolution low (R in sculpt mode in Blender to check the resolution). Grab a sphere in Blender and use the grab brush until it looks like a human silhouette. Press ctrl + R when the polys look too stretched to fix it.

Put the ZBrush cash into a cheap graphics tablet and use Blender sculpting instead, at least until you get serious and start pumping out quality models.

Yeah I'm gonna need some evidence for that claim... Let's look at the results:
When you box model, you end up with the optimized model but no higher res to bake normal map / ambient occlusion from.
When you sculpt+retopo, you end up with the high res sculpt and the retopologized (the optimized) model. You can then bake normal maps etc from the sculpt onto the optimized model, which will look better than the box modeled mesh simply by having that normal map.
So you get a better result with the sculpting method, but it does involve more work.

Not just the modeling. Rigging is a hellish nightmare. In terms of fun and ease: Modeling > Texturing > Rigging
I'm not sure where animation sits as I haven't done much of it, seeing as how it's gated behind those other 3. Probably put it before rigging.

3d model chads I need your advice. I'm a 2d artist. I know my shit around 2d art pretty well. But 3d still confuses me and I've attempted to make some 3d models but it's so painfully slow, like, I use a ref image I make and do vertice per vertice tracing over the image, or I take shapes like spheres and deform them to fit the shape, yet, both can be so fucking slow... I'm a brainlet at this. What's the ABSOLUTE pipeline if you wanna do 3d shit for games? Not even like super detailed, just pretty. is it slow because your hardware isn't good enough? even if you don't know a powerful pc you can still do low poly modelling
work your way up in modelling, low (less than 1k polygons), mid (less than 10k polygons), (then high poly models [15k+ polygons ]assuming your computer can handle it)
if you want to experiment with 3D models in games, you can just create your game controls now and a test map, and just snag a ready to go model over at sketchfab

oh well in that case since you want to learn fast and learn optimization fast, then I would skip finishing models and just practice making the topology and meshes of models
stick with lowpoly modeling for quicker work, learn your fundamentals, make sure your topology is clean
but I would say what is most important is that because there's so much shit in blender so many tools and buttons, I would seriously recommend master the basics first rather learn everything equally and to become a jack of all trades sort of knowledge set
and keep using references for quick work too, everyone uses 2D references for 3D modeling it's fine
and if you need more there's plenty of blender tutorials and youtube shorts of "stop doing this, do this instead" type shit on youtube

I usually sculpt a really basic version of a model just to get forms right and then retopologize loosely but with subdivision on using subdivision 1 as the models target base topology and just use the multires as my subdivision and sculpt in detail needed there, it's non standard but I end up with the best of both worlds, only limitation is performance on multires model so in order to test animations I need to turn it off.

I've tried low poly PS1 style, flat color, 'schizo-core', FF7 vertex color style (requires a high degree of mesh modelling skill), texturing with flat projection like Quake, sculpting and baking into low poly, basically everything
the inconvenient truth seems to be that unless you're a good artist and can texture, you're boned
recently I've been trying a method of sculpting with very low poly objects, like a cube that's been subdivided by 1 with smoothness set to 1 (not the subdiv modifier) but that rarely works

it did start as a sculpt, but the body was retopoed, and everything else (including the boobs) was made from box modeling. i could have box modeled the body, but i didn't have an orthographic image to use as a reference so sculpting then retopoing is much easier for me

Since it seems like youre trying to force a general here, i have an idea. We should make simple little party game, like for example a chase chase jokers clone, even i could code that, and put the low poly characters people make here in the game. This kinda works, this is local, this is fast. You had to fix a few things along the way, tho. As every step is shitting the bed, but if you have money/torrent you can swap any tool for a good one.

I'm no pro and I enjoy sculpting first and the retopoing so much more. You get to experiment with shapes much easier to make tweaks to your design that didn't transfer over well from 2d

You're trying to do two things: learning how the program works (how to customize it, navigate the viewport and use all its tools), and learning art skills AKA becoming an artisan.
Such that if you ask a great ZBrush sculptor to model something in real clay, it'll look great because the guy has art skills that can be used anywhere.
Lots of great modelers draw and paint, they're good artists in general.
Don't bite more than you can chew so you won't feel discouraged, so always start with small projects ("modeling a knife") that you can fully finish.

this is the best beginner tutorial series out there. after that consider checking out their courses; the core fundamentals on their site is excellent. not even shilling, just wish someone pointed me to this when I first started instead of bullshit like the donut tutorial which teaches you next to nothing besides how to follow instructions without understanding the why
after doing the basic tutorial series it depends on what you want to make and what your strengths are, that'll determine your path going forward
