It doesn't come from a rational judgement of "how much realism matters here?"
It comes from a dogmatic place. A lot of progressive ideas rely on employing self-delusion to avoid wrongthink, and the capabilities of women is a big one.
So if someone is okay with women in combat but not okay with skimpy armor, they're not usually thinking in terms of what is appropriate for the game, they're pretending that women warriors are realistic and they're ignoring the contradiction entirely.

It depends on the type of vidya setting. If we're dealing with some outlandish fantasy world where style is higher on the priority order than any semblance of historical accuracy then solution B is the way to go (and that's basically what JRPGs/TRPGs have been doing for decades anyways).

I only ever play the same character in most RPGs, a muscular brute force melee guy, because that is the most fun for me.
I tried playing other characters quite a few times, but it's just not as fun. It feels like less that I am truly in the game myself and more like controlling a character in the game or I am an actor in a stage play which I do not enjoy a lot.
I sometimes play another character for variety, but it never feels as great and like an amazing adventure as when playig my comfort guy.

Plate armor does require some fitness and training to move agile and nible in. If you put some rando jackass into plate, he will probably fight worse with it than without it.
But if you are strong and fit and practiced with it, it shouldn't really hamper combat mobility in a meaningful way.
