I'm not going to word this correctly as a retarded zoomer but I just get this feeling when watching old TechTV/EP/GameSpot stuff, when they would interact with a celebrity or an uninitiated normie, they all still had this expectation that video games were going to be incredible in the future, and the center of pop culture.

Was that actually the expectation back then? If so, why didn't it happen?

graphics were improving so rapidly everyone assumed photorealism was just around the corner, movies and games were expected to eventually merge, I think a lot of the technological race was blunted by mass online stuff because it couldn't keep up. obviously AI was not on the radar

100% in line with what I remember. We all thought that the features would keep being built upon, that each installment in a series would have all of the features of its previous games AND MORE. After all, why wouldn't each iteration be an improvement upon the last? We even considered that the game industry would need to hire more people and it would take more work to build a game BECAUSE of this increase in complexity, which is why the sentiment around microtransactions early on was "It's an optional payment and the money can go back into future developments".

I expected the technical advancements to stop at some point after the 2010s just because of Moore's Law and what not, but I didn't expect game dev to actively get worse because the people making games were only in it as a 9-5 job, not as a passion project. That's what fucking kills me and why I hate most modern games now. Games like Stellar Blade and Nier:Replicant, while not revolutionary, are what modern games should be like. Unfortunately, only Asians (small to mid-size Japanese, Chinese and Korean studios) seem to recognize that nowadays and Western devs have eschewed good game-making for making shitty propaganda and shitty Hollywood movie games.

We can have decent to amazing graphics and good games. It's just that the modern gaming market in the West is actively opposed to actually making good games.
