The only thing Rogue has going for it is more refined mechanics and especially better ship combat. Basically everything else was worse.
The world is way scaled down. Northern Atlantic is boring, and the river map is puny.
The story in Black Flag is also way better. It's a grand adventure with genuine character development and themes that are true to how the Assassins are supposed to be. And a satisfying ending as a bonus.
Rogue just has all the Assassins act like retarded clowns while Shay repeatedly shouts out his annoying catchphrase. Then the Templars show up and just act like generic helper npcs with no relation to how they are in any other game. And Liam is probably the lamest villain in a series where the bar for that is very low.
People only care about it because they trot out nostalgia characters like Haytham and Adewale for people to "ooh" at every few missions.
The present day is also a lazy reskin of Black Flag's.
The Paris segments tease a tie in to Unity's story, but in the actual Unity game itself, the plot thread is dropped in the opening cutscene and never even mentioned again, so whole thing feels like a waste.
