I have no idea why this started a big franchise. Even dumber is that all these years later we still have to see a looter shooter that's actually GOOD.

>The gunplay is fun
>The graphics are wonderful and the main selling point
>The gameplay is fun (you already said it)
>A lot of the loot is boring crap, thank go imagine switching to a new gun every two enemies
>No inventory at all what do you mean
There you go, it's because everything you said was wrong
And I don't even like Borderlands

most frustrating franchise in the least tapped genre.

Especially sucks that there aren't many good solo-play alternatives.

>I have no idea why this started a big franchise

BL2 was bankrolled by funding misappropriation, with SEGA's money they gave for used on Aliens: Colonial Marines used on Gearbox's own IP instead. BL1 is dry, but the sequels make me take some of the stuff for granted. Able to pick up a rifle off the ground with no gimmicky bullshit and actually lasting a few levels if it's good quality, and no obnoxious writing.

Of all games I found that Roboquest filled the void somewhat despite being a bit different genre-wise. Still, hard to believe that game apparently took EIGHT fucking years to get to where it finished for good.

When it was new, looter shooter wasn't a genre yet, so the novelty of mixing FPS with Diablo loot systems was huge at the time. Hellgate london was probably the only game prior that had shooter gameplay in a loot-based rpg, and that game wasnt purely a shooter, either.

It was pretty much the first of its kind.

A co-op shooter with Diablo mechanics was virtually unheard of at the time.

>Shiting on graphics...for a game released in 2009...
This bait is sad.
The game is dated and that's a fact. The reason why it's so good though is for the atmosphere, irony of which is that it was accidental by product of development hell this game was, which was planned to be released as a "mad max" inspired experience.

This part is sadly what differentiate this game from any later instalments and the reason why it would never be this good ever again... It's was an accident, simply as that. No wonder gearbox never understood what made the first game so special, it because they didn't even know what the first game was in the first place themselves...

It was a little dull solo, thankfully it had one good sequel that was S tier

You just explained how what you liked about the game was something entirely unintentional that (you) interpreted and then called them out for not replicating something they have no possible way of knowing about. Do you not see how that's unreasonable?

And no I don't like Randy I resent the fucker. Where's the duke life is a beach campaign in duke nukem? Motherfucker. And the new engine was ass.

>>the gunplay is dogshit
it's good actually. you'd know that if you actually played the games. (and understood rpg combat and rules, idiosyncrasies.)
>>the graphics are ugly
it's a unique artsyle actually. It's serviceable at worst and only guilty of the same flaws any other game has.
>>the gameplay is boring
skill issue. personally I don't care too much for the travel segments in borderlands games. this shit ain't Stalker, it's all about the combat and the story motivation for it/loot drops.
>>the gunplay is unsatisfying
skill. issue. you obviously don't understand how you're supposed to play a game with rpg combat. you need to be around the same level to progress in character and gear, in most rpgs.
>>a lot of the loot is just boring crap
this is the closest thing you've said to being correct yet you're still wrong. you need to pay attention and learn how the loot works to appreciate it properly (like 99.99% of all things.)
>>small inventory
BL1 has the biggest inventory in the serious you double new faggot fraud.
>>failed attempt at making a RPG shooter, yeah nothing is more fun than trying to shoot at a enemy then seeing you do no damage because your level is too low, then coming back with a couple more levels and a better gun and just killing everything
welcome to RPG combat little bro. maybe you'll slow down one day and you'll actually have fun

Borderlands 3 loot is great, you just want to farm 20 hours for a single legendary.
Gunplay hasn't improved one bit from 1 and the characters classes are the best in the series.

People who praise having to grind 5+hours for a single weapon are insane. Game showering you with choices in a shooter is a good thing for fucks sake.

The point of game direction (at least in art) being an accident is a plain fact. Now, what I'm referring to is the broader discussion of the borderlands franchise and divide of first game and later games. People state all the reasons in the world for why it's not the same as it was before but because of the initial fact that it was an accident, those complaints are not only futile but also misguided, ironically, the exactly the same way that devs themselfs go about deciding on what made the game good and what they should prioritize. It's not really unreasonable for me to pray that devs would take a step back and see and study why people prefer the first game over literally everything that come after it and why. It is rather pointless though since it involves actually caring about the product and trying to make something exceptional rather than "passing".

That's a pretty narcissistic outlook. You're just assuming that you have the correct idea about the game and what makes it good based on your own biased preferences, and asserting that your ideals should be the ones followed over what anyone else wants or values. If they don't read your mind and create your ideal game then they'll always fail this purity test, it's absurd.

Yes and it sucks, it kind of worked in bl1 because it was somewhat balanced by the "grimness" of the rest of the game (and different times) which is kinda my whole idea here, it's about contrast. I'd argue borderlands 1 was in a sense very brutalist, which was then defused by the humor, this is why I think devs focused on that in the first place since it was too grim without it. Later game though crank up the humor to 11 while removing all the brutalist grime, turning the game into a clown fest fanfic. Humor also is very much culturally based, so if the culture at that time sucks, so would the humor and I don't think anyone here will argue for current culture being in the "golden age" of quality and genuiness.

As for my opinions they are just that, an opinion. It is as selfish of me to state them as for anyone else, only mine are backed by genuine will of understanding and passion while others might be out of autistic frustration. "Game mechanics", "stat jerking", "balance nuances"are nothing but autistic larp that will never satisfy anyone. Hyper meta games like PoE should teach one how one patch every is praising the game the other they send death threats to devs, all because their flavor of the month strat don't work anymore. When people talk about specifics of particular mechanics it's nothing but a retarded nitpicking for emotional satisfaction.

I'm trying to get to get to core of the game and what makes it good, not autism over arbitrary subsystems.

It also had some of the worst. EX: sniper scopes.
The one good thing about it is most of the guns didn't look and feel like toys. It wasn't superb, but in comparison to shit like the floating pingpingping, laser tag-esque SMGs in 2+, it's genius

Probably one of the better attempts at a FPS equivalent to Spelunky or a 'roguelite' I've played. It in particular does remind me of Borderlands in some ways between visuals and superficial gameplay elements, just condensed into 20-30min runs and with like two dozen permutations of eyebots and turrets. A lot of the passive upgrades just progressively give the player a lot of control with the in-run economy.
