It was 100% a humiliation ritual, and you can see the struggle because the second season deliberately goes out of its way to change entire sections of the game, and since the whole mess with public reception was a disaster something weird has happened: Cuckmann was kicked out. Now he's in "full" creative control over the second half of Last of Us 2 where Abby hangs out with a tranny and Ellie murders 500 people just to let Abby live.
