The story is fantastic, and the art direction when you consider the time period is actually solid and unique.

But the gameplay?
The gameplay is terrible.

Trial-and-Error platforming gameplay? Precision jumping in a game that 100% does NOT come prepared for precision platforming?

Garbage ragebait. This game should get a resurgence with streamers that stream rage content, it would make so much money for them

Literally all of the first run direct-to-console 3D fighting games, yes, even Bloody Roar and Tobal No.1, that were made immediately after the success of Battle Arena Toshinden.

They are irritating to play by today's standards and even I, someone who was alive and gaming when the PS1 was released, call them clunky. They are on no-one's must play or favorite game list.

It’s amazing that Lorne Lanning and the communist politics of the last decade in general have managed to suck the fun out of such a creative game. I was open to evil corporation stories during this time period. It was only when leftist dipshits started their current routine in the Feminist Frequency days that anyone started to feel uncomfortable about them.

You weren’t. That’s kind of the point. Late '90s devs loved that “gotcha” design philosophy. Everything was either a deathtrap or an obscure ass puzzle hidden behind a foreground object no sane person would think to interact with. You were supposed to die there, reload, and magically "learn" to check barrels by trial and error. It was peak “figure it out, loser” gaming.

The game isn’t that hard if you actually think about what to do in each room for more than 5 seconds. The real bullshit is finding all of the hidden rooms, because there’s usually no indication of where they are. The sequel did this better with the bottles hinting at where the secrets were.

This anon is a faggot and I can understand all the replies against him, but I gotta be honest...he has a point. Abe's Oddysee has terrible controls, even for the time it releases its control scheme was fucked. Often you'd know exactly what you need to do as a solution, only for the scuffed controls to ruin your execution of it. Trial-and-error due to poor controls is the worst part of the game. The remake, New 'n' Tasty, has better controls but unfortunately butchered the artstyle so significantly that I still would rather replay the original anyway.

I wonder if a mod exists to unfuck this game's controls, especially the throwing and delayed jumping.
A few of the secrets are bullshit too, where you need to take a leap-of-faith at the exact correct trajectory into what is normally a death pit. I've beaten Rayman 1 (all cages) before though and it's far worse in that regard.

Alright chucklefucks here's a quick rundown
>a grid-based coordinate system is used (with few exceptions)
>movement input from the player is approximated to the nearest coordinate cell position of an intersecting tile
>this is why jumping can feel "sluggish" if the player presses the input earlier than the next cell position
Literally speaking, this is a less precise movement system. Why? Because it elimates floating-point precision from the moment the player actually pressed the button, in favor of waiting for the next rounded intersecting cell integer value. Anyone calling Oddysee's controls "precise" is an absolute clown.
