Why does it seem like 90% of the things I do in this game amount to literally nothing aside from a bit of lore flavor text?

I got like 90% through the game and just dropped it. Zero motivation to keep going through the same repetitive motion chasing red herring dead ends for zero payoff aside from my ship log updating.

Got to the sun station (which I probably reached way later than the average player) thinking SURELY that was the missing link that I had skipped over that would make everything connect... but nope.... just another completely pointless dead end that does nothing except give a bit of flavor text and a ship log update.

What a miserable, tedious, repetitive, obnoxious game

Still it's impossible to have any ground on this corpse of a website to talk openly, all the replies itt are going to be mainly antagonizing OP over just talking about the game. The short timeframe when 4shit was down was a gift because on alternate chans users were real people. And the post volume was low enough but not too low to let people think before they would write something.

That's what happens when you have a mod team that gives zero fucks about the site combined with a massive website made solely for the purpose of shitting this site (and more specifically, this board) up.
Not that it will matter in the near future. The internet as we know it will disappear when you will be required to identify yourself going online.

Because it is an exploration game, if you're trying to sell a game where you uncover what an ancient civilization did before you, and all the text you find is not lore but directions like:
>Log 1: Dear reader, go to point A and do B. End of log.
>Log 2: Dear reader, machine C needs component D. End of log.
then youโ€™ve failed at selling the atmosphere.

Look at Metroid Prime. It is an action-exploration game. Everyone in those threads has a good laugh reading the Space Pirate logs, even though they are nothing but "a bit of flavor text." There is also the Chozo or the designated local alien life lore, wherever the mission takes place, and 100% of it is optional. However, it helps make the world believable.
If itโ€™s not for you, then refund it. No one is forcing you to play it, OP.

It takes the average player 25 hours to beat, not 100%, just the base game, not the DLC, even with occasionally looking things up. And for 100% or DLC or totally blind, it's way longer. And those come from HLTB and gamefaqs so casual players are much longer.

You can see 95% of the game in first 1-2 hours so that's a LOT of fucking padding and tedium and red herrings

It's, mostly a combination of the initial wave of people interested in discussing the game wading while the usual suspects discover the threads and start shitting it up, making it next to impossible for people who were a little late to really discuss it.
I think the last good example of this was Signalis? I'd say Snoot Game, but that game had its own problems (the mods being humorless candyasses).

>that's a LOT of fucking padding and tedium
There is legitimate tedium in the game. Let me list it:
>Hourglass Teleporters
>Fish area inside Bramble (since you have to go slow)
>DLC puzzles that are tied to the water level
>Tower of quantum knowledge (Even though you dont need it and even then you can reach it with by orbiting the black hole and your jetpack)
I am fairly certain that everything else in the game can be completed quickly. Once you've explored a hard to reach place once, you either have everything you need from it (meaning you don't need to repeat it) or a shortcut is revealed at the end for future use (reducing tedium).
The ship's computer is specifically designed for players who can't be bothered to sit down and analyze what they've just read. So, even that part of the "tedium" can be skipped if you don't want to think for yourself.
So no, it is not a LOT of tedium, as you claim, Anon.

I have enjoyed this game in vr immensely. The problem is the performance is absolute garbage. I have an iron stomach, but even though the game has low fidelity, it pushes great hardware to the brink, so frame delivery is ass, and it causes dips below 90 way too often, which is the only time I get nauseas. I can jetpack and do flips in the spaceship all day if itโ€™s locked. The devs should release an official vr version, and then Iโ€™ll actually finish the game.

NTA, but it sure sounds like you failed to pick up on many, many clues.
The clues the game holds aren't even hidden solely in the text. They're present in the surroundings as well.
In fact, you could ignore ALL text present in the game and figure out what to based on observation alone.

that's because that's the entire game
it's a walking simulator with a shitty gimmick so midwits cream themselves over it

>do skyrim-tier puzzle
>get boring ass exposition about the type of toilet paper extinct aliens use
>tells you to go to planet b
>get to planet b, start to do another skyrim-tier puzzle
>time runs out, start over

You do this over and over until you find the one actual right path in the game. That's it.
It's a fucking shit game, of course nu-/v/ loves it. It's the slightly more pretentious equivalent of normies loving Souls games because they think souls games are 'hardcore', even though they're piss easy.

While there are a few tedium-based events that require you dick around and wait for specific timepoints, it can be a little tedious if you're not fully understanding what you need to do and continue to bash your head against an obstacle instead of doing something else. I was guilty of this when I first started because I had been conditioned by most modern puzzle games to think that the solution should be at the same location as the puzzle.

I played this game twice, the second time because of the DLC, and both times i landed on the sun station by suiciding into the sun like 10 times with my ship until i got a stable orbit, i still don't know how you're meant to get there legit.

the final puzzle is statistically highly improbably to do by trial and error
even if someone pointed you in a general direction you couldn't get halfway there without some very specific prerequisite knowledge

While it is true that some games have a horrendous fanbase that make discussion impossible. This one is kind of the opposite: You got some fun enjoyers like >>717441171, and then you have people that open the thread for the sole purpose of shitposting
So whats the big idea. Forbid any thread that it get shitposted hard enough?

The only thing that isn't probable is to figure the hourglass teleporters work. It is not impossible, but everything else is likely to be done by accident. I found the Vessel by messing around for example.
What makes it "improbable" as a whole is that just by messing around, you're likely to find clues. These clues would then invalidate the trial and error run since you have the knowledge now, wherever you wanted the knowledge or not.

One of the teleport towers on ash twin goes to the sun station. The puzzle is that the hallway to the teleport pad is covered in cacti so you have to either be good at using your jetpack to fly past them or get there just as the door is revealed by the lowering sand level so the cacti on the floor are still covered by the sand

Zoomers can't "mess around". They have had a tablet glued to their face since birth, constantly drawing their attention. If the tablet turns off for any reason they cry and mommy fixes it for them and they go back into stupor. They dont understand "play", they need a guide at all times, preferably someone else playing for them and commenting. I've seen this in the workforce now too. People can't figure anything out because they refuse to play.

No, I actually quite enjoyed the exploration at first when it was new and there was that sense of wonder, awe, and tension.

It was only after I started doing the same loops over and over for hours tying up all these dozens of loose (dead) ends, retreading the same areas, waiting for tiny timed windows to have a small chance to read a few lore tidbits or solve a pointless puzzle, chasing YET ANOTHER red herring that amounts to absolutely nothing, that I ultimately realized this is just a waste of time and the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I've seen the vast majority of what the game has to offer and the honeymoon period has worn off, now it's just become tired and tedious

The only thing holding this game back from being a 10/10 is the god awful writing. They just HAD to get the lead designer's faggot sister to be narrative lead. You have the ideal game structure to serve as the backdrop to exisentialism and grappling with the fear of death, and instead we get they/them aliens and whedon quips.

it's endearing
that's the smart direction to take it, to contrast the gameplay and setting
doubling down on edgelord or 2deep4u writing may seem complementary but it would significantly detract from the experience and it would unironically insist upon itself

>it's endearing
No, it's not, it's insipid and above all, unfunny. "Insisting upon itself" is just cope for millenials who are afraid of sincerity in their writing. Hence their love of irreverent Marvel garbage. You can have both endearing and more sobering writing in the same game. The Hearthians could be jovial and naive, and this could contrast with the cold distance of the long dead Nomai. But instead, everyone comes across like a faggot.
