Demon's Souls, spear + shield is pretty kino. It was a different time.
Additionally FF7 Cid w/ Long Reach, Counter, Counter Attack, and Deathblow+Added Cut materia feels fucking great early on.

Nioh and Nioh 2 are a blast to play with a spear.

>3 different stances, high, medium, low
>High has heavy, sweeping attacks using the pole's full length to smash enemies while still slashing/stabbing
>Medium has proper pokes, swipes, and keeps the weapon close to your chest with more consistent combos
>Low goes for quick swipes and dashes
>Comes with tons of different abilities, including spinning the spear around, going for deeper stabs/counters, using it to offset/grab the enemy using the pole itself, bashing with the end of the pole, setting off a flurry of stabs, and charging headlong with the spear pointed outwards

It's one of the few games that does more than just a simple poke, which I really appreciate. Obviously you can still poke shit to death, but Nioh actually remembers that a spear often has a bladed edge besides the point, and a long ass pole you can bash people with, which it implements into combos.

sort of but the combat is a lot more intricate with some fighting game like inputs for certain moves that you'll want to string together.

Nioh is an action game with a stamina system. Except for being immortal and having shrines (bonfires), the games are nothing alike. Nioh is mission-based and the main gameplay loop is about collecting stronger weapons and armor, sorta like Diablo. Right after the first mission you get sort of a "super mode", something a Souls game would probably never have.

Kind of? I'd argue it's more like you took Ninja Gaiden and Diablo and mashed them together. It absolutely does the usual Souls nonsense, but after a few hours of playing you realize it actually has combo systems, extremely in-depth equipment stat/effect management, customization, and even NG+ essentially being a new mode to get real, proper gear.

If you don't like Souls you probably wouldn't like Nioh much, but it's definitely a different, more action-focused experience.

Guns are technically a pointy stick, except they put an explosion between the point and the stick.

Nioh actually has a functional guard without needing a shield. In that way, it's more akin to the Xbox Ninja Gaiden games. It's much faster than your usual Soulslop, and the areas aren't connected. You choose missions on a map.

Let me just tell you right away that the start is the hardest part, because you have nothing except your normal moves, and although the game is mission-based, the main missions are huge. I only really started liking it after a good 5 hours, that's when you start to get good skills and good equipment starts to drop.

For example, although the game has parries, it only works on humanoid opponents and you need to buy a skill to use it first.

Also, the healing items (Elixirs) are actually limited until you find some spirits hidden in stages (Kodama). So you can actually go into a stage and get trounced by a boss 10 times and have no more healing items. Just be careful with that.

Lastly, contrarily to Souls games, you can use an item (Summon Candle) to exit a mission and not lose anything.

Be prepared for some growing pains starting out. At the beginning, it's honestly kind of tedious since you're missing critical abilities/mechanics that feel insane to be missing later when you get them. That, and opening a chest for the first time and getting doused with a rainbow of weapons, armor, and consumables, all of which you'll probably sell because they're garbage. Get past all of that though and the games become crazy addicting. It's genuinely one of those games where I'd argue it doesn't "click" until either halfway through, or even once you've beaten it and gone into NG+.

Also, I'd argue Nioh 2 is almost objectively better overall. Nioh 1 is great, but a lot of mechanics Nioh 2 introduces are hard to come back from. That, and being able to create your own character is nice.

If you give it a shot, I hope you enjoy it anon. Even if you entirely ignore the spear (which you shouldn't), all of the weapon types are fucking awesome.

I really liked the Spear in Dark Souls II. It had a sweeping heavy attack that also did Blunt damage for some reason so it was an extremely versatile weapon.
Dimitri and Ephraim from Fire Emblem are also very fun spear users but the combat in those games are just animations.

For me? It's the halberd.

Divorced from the soul-draining battlefield 'pikes and cavalry' meta. A distinguished guardsman's weapon. Not so long that it becomes cumbersome. Fire axe in a pinch.

You see a town guard with a halberd? That's a good town. Stick around.

I hate how in the souls games spears don't have much in the way of slashing attacks. Spears weren't just for thrusting they could also be used in a slicing/ chopping motion almost like a very long ax.
