Let me just tell you right away that the start is the hardest part, because you have nothing except your normal moves, and although the game is mission-based, the main missions are huge. I only really started liking it after a good 5 hours, that's when you start to get good skills and good equipment starts to drop.
For example, although the game has parries, it only works on humanoid opponents and you need to buy a skill to use it first.
Also, the healing items (Elixirs) are actually limited until you find some spirits hidden in stages (Kodama). So you can actually go into a stage and get trounced by a boss 10 times and have no more healing items. Just be careful with that.
Lastly, contrarily to Souls games, you can use an item (Summon Candle) to exit a mission and not lose anything.
