Deltarune OC
Deltarune OC
md5: a1e4e38107925a5a60b3c554fec98372๐Ÿ”
Been playing Deltarune recently and tried for the first time to create something and share it with you guys. Do you lot have any OCs of your own, or just art that you've made? What series inspires you the most?

I don't know why but when I was making this character, all I could think of is being a broom collector... and a broom oriented martial artist.

Undertale (and now Deltarune) gave me hope that anyone can create something successfully.

However, I'm in my 30s and my work is messy (picture related) and I cant really self-teach myself to draw better at this state. I wish I had discovered the game series when I was younger and had a better chance as I would've loved to create a comic or game inspired by it. But the doodles is all I can do really

I wrote my first (and so far only) TTRPG book at 37. It's now published and sold a little over 250 copies, which is frankly amazing for a new author (and only some of those were my friends and family). I'm going to start writing my 2nd one next year, once I get some ideas nailed down.

You know when it's too late to create something? When you're dead. Those little critters you drew are pretty creative in that late 80s-early 90s vibe. Get a basic plot going, some character voices, figure out the gameplay (I'm thinking platformer), and you're good. Are you likely to become Toby Fox-levels of successful? Almost certainly not. Will you get some people that like your thing? Almost certainly yes.

Well I had a whole world designed as a RPG, inspired by a mix of Toby's creation and Final Fantasy storytelling. But without even making a game, and the scale of it is huge, its stupid to work on such a big project and I'm shifted directives to a smaller test project.

But its likely I will draw a comic instead, making it easier to get started. I was thinking a childrens book, since I have a nephew now, and would use my designs to make a story for him

Oooh pretty nice anon!

A question that I have in mind for anyone interestedโ€ฆ what makes some OC truly feel like they belong instead of feelingโ€ฆ like someoneโ€™s OC? I feel like even if you emulate the style down to reusing some assets it becomes nothing more than copy paste. And how does improving and altering a recipe still feels like it belongs? Like Tennaโ€™s design and animation is wholly unique compared to everyone else, yet he feels like he belongs to Toby Fox.

That can work and you shouldn't necessarily start huge, but at the same time, you don't want to put it off forever. Make a level, see if people like it, and if they do, suddenly you'll have fans, and volunteers, and investors. It's a great ego trip that keeps you working, so long as you don't let it get to your head. Plus the satisfaction of going "Hey I fucking MADE something, how cool is that." And age is just a number.

The problem is, your looking at just from that 1 picture I uploaded, and presume I can do anything else. I can't draw correct anatomy, perspectives or even backgrounds. Even the example picture has too much details, causing hands to be merged into the body.

Toby is the better artist since he can draw what he wants, even if its crappy-good. I can't draw any requests, everything is the same look, I have no range. I can't even draw basic animals like a dog or a cat

Toby, while talented, is more of a musician and game dev. His OG doodles are very doodle-y, and Temmie is the one that's polishing them up and making them not look like ass, and then it's passed off to a sprite designer. Yes your designs are busy, but like I said, it gives them that late 80s-early 90s charm. They look like the little gribblies on the cover of "Dr. Stein" by Helloween.

I don't really care about stuff like this but for me as someone looking in on occasion; I feel like the worst thing people do is try too hard with fan shit. I think no matter what your intent will never be the same as the source material's. So it'll always feel off, and I think at that point it'd just be easier to embrace that and enjoy your perspective of the work. The more you try to dilute it with semantics and autism the more you just whittle down your own creativity. If you have something to say just say it and enjoy the process, enjoy the tribute you make, it's supposed to be for fun at the end of the day anyway.

When people enjoy something, nobody ever cares about this kind of thing at the end of the day. The things that get popular are homogenized and vague enough to roughly apply to anyone. (plus going through the painfully mundane effort of advertising)
That doesn't mean niche things can't and shouldn't exist, art is made for the enjoyment of the artist, and those who can connect can and will connect. I can tell that just by looking at these few drawings, I wouldn't mind looking at more completely uncritically. It's just an immediacy thing anyone can feel, and while you might want higher standards for yourself, it shouldn't be because you are concerned about experience. Experience only means you went through with doing shit, not by some arbitrary method of study. People bring up Toby not because his stuff is a perfect recipe to make things work, but rather it's because he just did shit and people resonated with it. The material is out there and real, and that's the biggest hurdle most people tend to have over anything else.

Yeah, but simply enjoying what you do isn't enough to make things work (and successful for that matter).

You go into a comic shop, you see 100s of comics people "enjoyed" making, you aint gonna read the majority of them cause they're shit

You go watch a film, you have a choice of thousands to watch. Most are generic cliche garbage that people "enjoyed" making.

You need to make what you love work, and people just dont care about quality, but you enjoy doing it, so thats ok, I'm sure its gonna make the world a better place with more shit in it.

Hardly even a musician, 90% of the tracks in Undertale and Deltarune are just recycled melodies ripped straight from old games or obscure albums. It's not even subtle. If you've listened to anything outside his little cult following, it's obvious how much he copies.

And no, chapters 3 and 4 aren't safe either. Just listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2XOoEAraB8

I think the real question is: When is Toby Fox going to make something that isn't derivative of other media with much higher quality?

Not really, you need to compromise a lot for things to be "successful" but everything else you said is just blatantly untrue. If people like something, they're always willing to give it a shot. The problem is people are more vocal about getting into hobbies for social reasons, but that doesn't inherently mean the audience of people to get into random shit for new experiences disappears. Despite how it feels like, it's pretty uncommon for people to just look at something and straight up assume it's bad.

Plus at the end of the day quality isn't really a measurement for anything when it comes to art or media, it's just entertainment and that's another thing that easily gets poisoned. People are well aware that regardless of something's quality, it's always made by some other person and the interesting part is how that person views the world, not that it meets some criteria.
It shouldn't even be a problem if you're not even looking to make money off it anyway, there are worse things you can do with your time than just express yourself.

Its going to get a point where there is NO QUALITY CONTROL at all (looking at you A.I), where you wont feel inspired by anything at all anymore.

This isn't a perfectionist case, its just people are doing stuff because they can, and not doing it because they should.

It's like keeping the streets clean, eventually too much litter will flood everywhere unless people put the effort into stopping this.

The numbers are too skewered now, and everyone is going to suffer so hard because of it. If we're lucky, this shit will reset/fix itself, but again, by chance.

We still havn't learn in history that some things are irreversible, and by the time the world realises its mistake the damage is permanent.

Depends on the series. In Undertale the main thing to keep in mind is that its primarily a comedy game. So you need to make your characters comedic. Too many people make their characters badass or sexy, when they're supposed to be silly goobers.

Its a mix of overdesigning and not working with the setting you're taking inspiration from, it's trying too hard to be "your character" rather than "a character in this world". I should clarify, there's nothing wrong with having your own character be a reflection of you or your likes. But when you talk about trying to fit it in say, Undertale AUs, you gotta be willing to shift your design philosophy to be more about compelling characters rather than your oc who's super cool and important. Even undertale yellow is guilty of this, ceroba is very obviously an oc designed by someone who likes undertale and touhou. Its not a death nail but it is something you'll notice if you don't put the proper mix into it.

My Deltarune OC is a monster themed around a praying mantis who uses her faith in the Angel to Cope With Life(tm) as a literal Praying mantis. Her real life weapons are books which manifest in the Dark World as fuck off shields (hard book covers). She is initially all about protecting her friends and taking one for the team as a paladin, refusing to FIGHT, but then she realizes that she has a lot of fun clobbering Darkners with her shield and sparing them when they get TIRED. Her arc is like an inverse Susie where she actively enjoys FIGHTing and gets unique lines of dialogue when FIGHTing specific Darkners to further get players to understand that it is okay to FIGHT even on the so-called pacifist route. She admits that her uber religiousness is just a cope and a method of escapism, and that she should face her problems in real life instead of trying to pray them away or pretend that they did not happen because of religion, such as pretending that it was okay for someone close to her to suffer and die because it was in the Angel's plan. She gains a healthier relationship to her faith and uses it as a rock from which to gather strength instead of an excuse for inaction. (Her visual motifs include orchids (in reference to praying mantises that go completely still and hunt by pretending to be innocent orchids) with lots of flower puns and a secondary joke about really liking fictional characters. She makes a joke that she is no longer going to fantasize about the Angel every day. Instead she is going to fantasize about the Lord of the Hammer fictional character, the Priestess of Northlight, known by the fans as the Lady Knight of No Ls.) There is another joke that she has gone from being a praying mantis to a preying mantis. Her name is Verm with endless jokes about her being a bookverm.

I must regretfully inform you that I have lost the game and so have you

ceroba should have had like deer side eye with no proper emotive muzzle thing. Like one giant eye, face always in profile. That would have made her look undertale coded.

Now homestuck vampire, that guy is unfixable

There better be a romance route where she realizes as well that faith doesn't require chastity and I get to have a big mantis nun gf who playfully beats me up and tries her hardest not to kill me after sex like female mantises are known to do

You're not wrong, there's definitely something off here. It's like it's setting up for some big reveal, but the pieces aren't adding up cleanly. That whole undercurrent of things not being what they seem, all the little throwaway lines and red herrings-they're too deliberate to be nothing. It feels less like foreshadowing and more like laying a trap for the player to emotionally walk into. If this turns into another "twist villain" arc or some meta-narrative shenanigan about choice, I'm gonna start taping tinfoil over my monitor.

>Hardly even a musician, 90% of the tracks in Undertale and Deltarune are just recycled melodies ripped straight from old games or obscure albums
What an absolutely retarded statement. He still made the songs from scratch and made them sound good. Melodies aren't everything in his music
Are you gonna say someone is not an artist because they copy poses (outside of tracing)?
