Why do you think the average IQ of a PC gamer has fallen in the past decade?

Because PC gaming stopped being nerdy. Back in the day you had to know how to install drivers, mess with INI files, troubleshoot IRQ conflicts-hell, even build your own rig from scratch just to get a game running. Now it’s plug-and-play, RGB vomit pre-builts, and launchers doing everything for you. It’s more accessible than ever, but accessibility comes with a price: the floodgates opened and now you’ve got the same people who used to play console only whining about frame stutters and getting dunked on in CS2.

It does worry me that something as powerful as being able to Google a question and get, at least a mildly helpful response, is something that newer generations just don't use. I'm not asking for deep computer literacy, just the ability to open their phone and ask Google how to change a setting on their computer.

Making everything easier makes people less resourceful. I don't know how to fix it, we won't make technology harder to use just to train people.
I guess schools should be responsible for teaching new generations how to function in the world, but the education programs and teachers themselves completely fail at keeping the interest of kids and young people. They don't want to go to school and don't pay attention and I don't blame them, the lessons are boring and they don't teach anything useful in real life. It's almost guaranteed you will not be solving quadratic equations at work and nobody will ever ask what you think about some 700 page 19th century book.

And it is a little hit of a slippery slope. I don't want to get banned because my mouse used it's direct memory access to change its colors and the anti cheat thinks its a hardware cheat. That's never gonna be good considering how much shit random bits of your set up now has bloatware attached.

No it isn't. The only thing easier is to get driver files in the first place because you can just download them from somewhere instead of having to buy some computer magazine.
But installing a program is the same as it was 30 years ago, just that you got a nice UI, building a rig is the same as it was 25 years ago (except that you don't have to fuck around with IDE cables anymore and that you now can put a storage device right onto the motherboard), INI tweaking has always been nerd shit that wasn't necessary for just playing the games, and IRQ conflicts have literally never been a problem for me in the almost 30 years I have been using computers so far.
And nothing of that is any kind of high iq achievement.

Secure boot is more or less like it sounds - a "secure" boot-up. The idea is that any sus shit trying to get its foot in the door that early, is gonna be checked to make sure it's properly signed and not something that shouldn't be there. For like 80-90% of users(probably 99% of windows users unless you're dual-booting), there's no issue having it on from the start.
As I understand it(smarty anons can shit on me if this is obectively wrong), the reason they want it is to add another place to block out cheating software. Some of that runs at the same level anti-cheats do, but the cheat software is highly unlikely to be signed and trusted, whereas the anti-cheat will be.

There is no longer any incentive nor requirement to learn anything about your PC. Everything you buy comes pre-installed with pretty much all basic programs you need, and if there is anything you want to install then Google can solve that.
Most normoids also don't bother changing any program from default so they never have any reason learn installing or even folder navigation.

There is more access to the information to actually build a computer nowadays, that can't be discounted.. The internet was nowhere near as kind as it is now to the uninitiated. You would need a manual or someone that knew better to guide you without mucking up your parts.
And I can tell you now in regards to this thread that is very much a relevant bit of information, that it's marginally easier to get into building and setup. Because since it's that much easier there's no excuse except pricing to worry about anything and the most recent generation is fried to the point they don't know how to navigate folders on a computer let alone do any of that. They only know how to dick around with apps.
The only skill needed to build a pc (and hell, a lot of things these days) is just following directions, and directions have never been easier to obtain. It's telling that even that is too much for the newer generation and even the lazy old farts complaining about tech advancement whilst growing and living in the age the most rapid tech advancement occurred in the first place. It's a damn silly joke.

That's 7 men + 7 wives + 49 children = a populace of 63.

7 children multiplied by 7 couples because he stated that each spouse has 7 children but didn't specify that all or some of those children were exclusive to a singular spouse and not shared by their other spouse, and even if they were, he should've noted that out and it's his fault for failing to provide consequential data. and in any case, fuck step-parenthood I'm interpreting this in my preferred way and i'm making them out to be seven happy nuclear families reproducing way above the average displacement rates.

Gen Alpha and younger Zoomers never knew a world where computers required skill. It was all phoneshit for them which hid all the technical details. They use tech more frequently than anyone else, but never had reason to learn what a filesystem was.

I'm no computer genius, but it was a weird enough error that it took me a week or so to figure out that was the problem.

I'd rather the zoomer learn by asking for help than having to learn how I did, by sending my BIOS into a boot loop and having to ask around only after the fact

The way the bootloop was happening in this case made me think it was a PSU or SSD issue.
In this case the actual issue was that the CMOS on this particular motherboard (fuck you Asus) kept setting the System time back to 2012 or something, which would send it into a boot loop.
This is an obscure enough hardware failure. I knew what a CMOS is, but it's such an edge case I didn't even think about it at first.

Point is, these people SHOULDN'T know that. They need to know about what a high hCRP means, and how to differentiate between venous stasis and venous insuffiency, and so on.

Could they learn this? Probably, IT ain't rocket science. But a) I'd be out of a job, and b) they'd be worse medical personnel. Better than IT does IT things and medical does medical things.

It's more like "Kids these days can't do anything!" Using search engines effectively is about the only skill I've heard anyone say zoomers have, and that's really not that much. Eventually the maintenance of a technologically advanced society is going to fall directly on your shoulders, and comparatively few of you have the skills to manage it. Whenever that's brought up, I always hear the same refrain "AI will do it."

Yes, because I'm using one. I'm retarded. I know more than what people say the average young person knows, being as I wasn't a mobile phone user, but my knowledge is still quite limited. It's not entirely the fault of zoomers that they don't know shit about computers. Lots of things are automated and fagified, they are made not to require much knowledge on your behalf, let alone even lead you into figuring things out. We are going to enter an age where nobody knows anything and therefor it will be offshored to those that do, or rather, that which does, and that's going to include AI. That is one of the many things that is going to enslave us in the future. Even those that care about technology and are relatively knowledgeable don't value things like technological freedom enough and then the problem for them becomes that they will concede and allow things to get worse when they hold the torch for the future and that will be the end of it.

This. They were unfortunate enough to grow up in a period where much of this technology underwent substantial refinement and where there was an explicit agenda of obfuscating users from the inner workings on both a software and hardware level. Apple is the biggest culprit of this, and is directly the cause of why many of their generation does not understand what file structures are. Public education is also largely disinterested in teaching them the finer points of the technology that is being integrated into nearly every aspect of society at a rapid pace. We should have stepped in to stop this, we still haven't, we're in for some wild fucking shit if AI technology never crystallises, perhaps even if it does. I hope you fags are ready to become techpriests, because it might legitimately come down to that.

Also, doesn't help that people would rather stop at the acknowledgement that younger users of technology are rather inept, then deride them, rather than even bothering, even when they have the opportunity, to even try to help. The landscape now is not the same as it used to be. Things don't just preserve themselves. Pointing it out and being baffled by the illiteracy is one thing, but doing so and then effectively declaring them and "enemy" in some regard, which is to choose yourself, to solidify their ineptitude and retardation to the extent you can help it, won't do anything.

I say this only because it does seem a common habbit of people to complain about a decline in younger generations and in society in general but then do absolutely nothing whatsoever to help it when they have the ability.

It's not unlike the boomer mentality of leaving their children with nothing and telling them to pick themselves up by their bootstraps.

Zoomers start in '97 and ends in 2012. ~60% of the generation does not remember a time before smartphones, and particularly Apple smartphones which they were promptly given to communicate with. This is the section of the generation that is technologically illiterate on average. The oldest zoomers scarcely avoided that. Those whom are currently going through college education have been PROVEN to not understand what a file structure is, let alone navigate it, with a deficiency that bad, it's not a stretch to claim they don't fiddle with their computers.

You are not the average. You are an outlier. What's being pointed out is that Generation X had higher technological literacy than Baby Boomers, and Millennials had higher technological literacy than Generation X, only with Generation Z did we see that average drop. It's not their fault. Apple proved itself hostile to increasing user competence and continues to do so to this day.

In theory, yes, hell, in the early 2010s there was a push to give laptops to kids for schoolwork to help improve tech literacy. In practice, education has been going down the shitter since before they were even born. If you're going into computer science fields in college though, there is a minimum expected level of competence and prior knowledge, I'm sure you can agree.

Also true. Again, the dip isn't their fault.
>I am average.
Not for your generation, sadly.
>pretty sure 90% of people that use a pc only need a browser to accomplish most of their job-related tasks.
That's exactly the problem. Computer systems on the user end have been foolproofed, there is no longer any pressure to learn deeper functions because they're maintained automatically, or by people who are beginning to age out of the field or are being fired in favour of cheaper imported or offshored labor. When something goes wrong, they're more likely to determine the problem is unfixable and simply buy a whole new device. I know this for a fact because I often salvage perfectly functional parts from rigs that were discarded because one part failed, and in one case, an entire computer because the bios got corrupted and the guy couldn't even identify the problem fixed it and gave it back to him, but still.

A kid born in 97 with no college degree has 100x the technological know-how than a kid born in 2005 who's about to get a college degree, the kid that barely knows what a folder is. Something becoming much much worse doesn't get excused just because le old people criticze it.

I work literally in a Fortune 500 Tech company and most non-tech staff are unable to do the most basic tasks on a computer. Even taking a screenshot requires them to look for "a screenshot software" in the Microsoft Store (that we're not even supposed to use to begin with). None of my colleagues knows how to Windows + L to lock their PC, they go on lunch/break leaving everything despite having access to customer PII and legal sensitive information.

No one knows ANY keyboard shortcut, they do everything manually and always take 5-6 steps to do something that requires at most 2. They're the kind of people you impress by doing a Windows + R > cmd or F12 to open the Chrome console, you're suddenly a hacker wizard. Doesn't help that we have no more IT on site, it's all remote and mostly in India now during EMEA hours, otherwise need to wait for San Francisco to wake up. But tech illiterate people are a massive liability in corporation like mine.

In my experience, and I graduated in 2015 so some things have surely changed, it seemed like priority number one was to train students to get a good ACT score and priority number two was to trudge through the curriculum that taught students basically nothing about the world they were about to enter and even less about how to function in it. You could have cut half the classes I attended and I would have been just as well prepared for when I got out and entered college. >Why do you think the average IQ of a PC gamer has fallen in the past decade?
Because gaming companies started being too formulaic.
When every studio innovated and experimented every game was something you had to learn from the scratch and it filtered a lot of people, these people were still there but they were congregated in doom and medal of honor communities incapable of adapting to multiple games.
Over time gaming became homogenized. Everything became a character-driven open world soulslike action RPG with microtransactions so they only needed to learn one system and play every game the same way which allowed them to propagate though the industry as a whole rather than being stuck in their small little world at the fringes.

The average normalfag carpenter or cashier is not doing anything complex enough that an 11 year old couldn't do it. Sending people to higher education beyond that only gives them ideas above their station, and is at least partially responsible for the epidemic of depression and sense of unfulfillment in modern people. Everyone knows that mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, even though practically nobody needs that knowledge. They know physics and chemistry and extensive world history, and for what? to remind them of how much of a failure their life is because they never get to use that knowledge? because no matter how educated the baseline population is, the ratio of unskilled vs skilled labour doesn't change. Exactly this. My colleagues keep complaining when doing transactional tasks because they're too dumb to automate most simple shit. A simple search and replace regex is beyond their ability, so if they are given a file with 300 lines and need to replace some specific strings in each line, they will do that manually, line by line. They could even ask AI to do it for them, but that's too hard also. None of them use Notepad++, they're stuck with the basic notepad.

This plays in our favour at the end of the day, use your knowledge to do more while working much less. I'm too skilled for my current seniority level but I don't care, I don't even want a promo at this point. Being at my level and working 5~10 hours a week for 75% of the pay of the next level is a much better deal than getting higher pay but having to work overtime (unpaid) because senior leadership will throw tons of work your way.

We learned jackshit abou PC's during our IT Lessons.
I even remembered one of the exam questions for a mock test was redesigning a bus to fit it as a roman style multimedia project. I kid you not. More creativity than learning about tech

I'm a trainee for zoomers and none of them know how to probably handle a PC or deal with any issues with it, they grew up on phones or tablets.
Our stuff is outdated and dogshit tho so I can't be TO upset, but I've had a few come to me on the verge of tears, and someone actually crying over very minor PC issues.

Installing win98 on period correct hardware was, and still is, one of the most challenging things you can do computer wise. Sure, any idiot can install a geforce 2 MX into a pci slot and install the nvidia driver for it. but I challenge anyone in this thread to do that not only for the graphics card, but the sound card, network card, and usb card. And keep windows 98 se stable enough to not only install the drivers for all those cards, and the motherboard itself, but install a shitload of period correct games. And once you've done all that, remember that the half life of a windows 98 installation is about one month before it randomly becomes unstable as hell and you have to reinstall it.

ngl I bricked my pc by changing a bios setting. About a week later the issue popped up so I didn't correlate the two. It was an Asus multi-core enhancement that caused random ass freezes. I swear I even reset it with the pins and reinstalled the firmware.

Went a whole year trying to troubleshoot. Solution I found was using 1 core-only to prevent freezing. Then one day I just toggled it off and everything just worked.

Nah, it was freezing even before you had access to the BIOS and during BIOS. Was like it could remember where to freeze.

Eventually after a lot of restarts the freeze moved a few hours into Windows.

The mainstream "PC Master Race" meme brought in an unbelievable amount of console kids converting to the "superior platform" and they brought with them their total technical illiteracy and shit eating non-existent standards
