Been feeling getting into a Metroidvania so I just started playing Super Metroid last night. Never completed it.

Any tips?

(Wanted to try Castlevania SOTN but it's not on the eShop ffs)

Literally have fun.
When you get the ice beam, you'll need to go to brinstar for power bombs. After you get those, go back to where the ice beam was. It's the only time the game doesn't subtly direct you to what to do next

>Any tips?

No. If it's your first time playing Super Metroid, then go into it as blind as you can be. Half of the fun is discovering cool shit you can do and finding unlockables.

I will be a hypocrite though and say the big boss in Maridia later in the game can be pretty though, so try experimenting with the arena's environment AND the grapple beam if you wanna cheese it

Also I recommend playing Metroid Zero Mission too after Super, since it's hella lot shorter and easier and would be a great game to pair along with Super to get into Metroidvanias

Thanks Metbros. Also wanna say I love the atmosphere in this game. Some of the horror music reminds me of Resident Evil 1 and even the music that plays when during that swinging plant boss thing where its spores fall down sounds like the fucking courthouse theme or Plant 42. Do you think RE1 took a bit of influence from this game?

Time to make a coffee and get back to the game.

This is not good game design. It's not fun to explore without hints.

why is your generation so afraid of the government when you can literally get away with emulating older games with zero consequence.
It would be a different story if the owners of these old games provided legal methods of playing their games, but they don't, so you're not even at fault for emulating them.
>>717653196

Yes. Especially considering the game drives you along by the (lack of) items you have. Cant reach that ledge next to the elevator in brinstar? Take the elevator. Oh, heated rooms. Cant go there. Huh, this one isnt heated. Hey, high jump. Back up to that room. Boss fight. VARIA. Hey I can check these heated rooms out now. Ice beam. Speed booster. Wave. Grapple. Huh, cant advance further down here. Let's head back up and poke around. Xray. Power bombs. More ammo. Man water really is blocking me off all over the place down here. Nowhere left to go except to the right from my ship, never checked it. Hey cool, new area. Phantoon. Cool the ship is powered up now let's look around. Hey GRAVITY COOL I CAN MOVE IN WATER NOW oh fuck now im in Maridia. Wow there's a ton of spots here that are way too hard to jump to, no way I can reach them with what I have now. Heres Draygon. What's this, space jump? Oh cool I can infinitely jump now. What's thru this door I couldn't reach? Oh damn this plasma beam is awesome it hits like a train. Welp I found everything here let's go check what's past that one room in norfair with the super deep lava. Oh shit awesome music. Fuck its that guy from the beginning. I can fight him now cuz im so much stronger! I beat him, awesome! Hey now that I killed these bosses i wonder what that gold statue of them i found will do. Oh shit Tourian. METROIDS man thank God I found that ice beam.

Etc etc

Every metroidvania works this way. You are intended to remember the places you cannot reach and when you locate a movement item or an item that nullifies an environmental hazard, backtrack to investigate the area(s) you could not access beforehand.

Don't use a walkthrough and don't worry about 100%ing the game on your first playthrough; just enjoy the game. Super Metroid was decades ahead of other games in terms of game design and its devs had basically nothing to really copy or draw from. It's actually mind blowing how good the game was and still is. Like, you don't need to add an asterisk when talking about it. It isn't "good for its time and set the foundation for later games," it's "one of the best metroidvanias ever made and able to go toe to toe with any modern games in the genre."

What makes Super Metroid so good is the fact that it's actually a linear game that mascarades as a non-linear one. If you aren't going out of your way to abuse hidden tech like wall jumping or shinesparks or take intentionally obtuse routing, you, for the most part, are going to play the game in a very specific order; especially on your first play through. At any given time the "correct" path is the one right in front of you, and very often the wrong ones are gated off. In the case of the Ice Beam, once you get it you realize "oh hey I can get out of that shaft in Brinstar that I couldn't get back up" and you return there. Once there you keep going up because the room conditions you to think about climbing up and, surprise, you get the Power Bombs.

I'm stuck in Maridia. Got the Spazer. I cant make it through the second metal barrier. I'm not fast enough. I also can't get back up out of Maridia.

This actually filtered me. I like to believe I'm not super dense because it did seem very off to me, but the problem was I did try normal bombs, missiles and super missiles but not power bombs which I only got later. So I just kept running past it thinking there was nothing I could do here. Now I getting destroyed by the Maridia boss because I didn't figure out yet how I'm supposed to get a few hits in without being caught by the stupid webs, though I might just have to be less greedy.
Loving this game so far. One of my favorite moments was probably the walljump reveal and the fact that you could just do it from the beginning, it's just impossible to discover accidentally.

The worst part about this is there's like a 5 second delay after you bomb it

The charge beam is your friend, much better than standard missiles.
When walljumping do one input after another, not at the same time.
Metroid cannot crawl, but she can ball.

I'd argue that it still does hint very strongly. The Speed Booster directs you to a room that leads back to the main shaft of Norfair near the Ice Beam gates, it locks you in a few rooms in upper red Brinstar until you find the power bombs, and the passageway to Croc is clearly marked on the map, which is very conspicuously located on the main shaft of Norfair.
While there's room for the players to miss the hints, it's a pretty clear progression if you ask me.
