It has no lore that matters because Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were confirmed to be in their own timeline not connected to any other game in the series. It's effectively a complete reboot that is still jam packed with references to the other games which mean absolutely nothing.

It's gonna take more than that to kill the franchise but if the next game is more open world slop it's over. It's one thing to fumble on a 30hr game like Skyward Sword, it's another to ask people to play 100+hr games for three consecutive times. I forced myself to finish it but 20hrs into TotK I was really feeling the nu-Zelda formula fatigue.

Going back to FF it was a one two punch first FF13 then FF15 dealt the killing blow.
