As you have figured out, Im mostly talking about new age chess players. They are not to be put on a pedestal like the old ones, because it's all autism with them. Chess is pretty much a solved game nowadays, and most of them learn how to autistically memorise patterns whilst having a personalised chess engine that helps them stay good.
This is kind of training artificial as fuck, meaning that you don't put any brain effort to come up with ideas; everything is being spoonfed to you and your only work is to choose what kind of solved strategy to play in real time. No wonder these nu chess players' brains have no value outside chess.

I started with 5. It's seen as the most feature rich and advanced of the series. Goes on sale for 5 bucks all the time, which is a steal for the amount of content you get. Still haven't come close to beating every dungeon, it's basically a forever game if you're into that. But it also has a short story campaign that eases you into the difficulty.
6 is also very beginner friendly and is a lot of fun, but costs more and isn't as pretty.
Would probably recommend against starting with 1 on SNES unless you're ok with Nintendo hard shit kicking your ass.

Anti-computer Chess tactics were initially built on the foundation of keeping the game as complex as possible so the computer would have to do more calculations and it was never about winning. It's not like Kasparov wasn't familiar with such ideas, he played some common anti-computer chess tactics in his matches vs. Deep Blue, and it's not like Kasparov couldn't draw Deep Blue either.
