SaGa fans take pride in having a high percentage of women in the fanbase. It's a series that appeals to casual gamers that play a little on the train to work, whereas Final Fantasy is for more hardcore gamers. The SaGa mobage was also very successful.

Spirits Within and the unending series of flops he made with Mistwalker are very much real, much like the fact that SaGa games are not only alive and well but inspired many generations of games is also real, it isn't Kawazu who bloated budgets beyond belief to the point FF struggled to make even despite selling millions.
I also wouldn't take the opinions of a fraud businessman who pushed for turning games into movies seriously against one of the few directors who strove for actual game design and gameplay over hollywood nonsense, but I guess you're also one of those people who think Inafune was a misunderstood genius.

Kawazu was the one who actually designed FF1 together with Ishii so no, if anything it's the opposite.
What little Final Fantasy has in terms of identity is what Kawazu and Ishii made with the first two games, Sakaguchi being a fraud was only capable of telling other people to copy what Kawazu and Ishii made in the first two games, which is also why FF4 for instance reuses a lot of FF2's story and characters wholesale but flanderizes them.
>SaGa was always a commercial disaster, and its existence was subsidized by Final Fantasy's mega success.
SaGa 1 was literally Square's first million units selling title, despite Sakaguchi really wishing it would bomb as the petty asshole he is, but okay.

You don't miss the mechanic that even the remaster dropped but for some reason you also don't miss the dozens of game mechanics that were dropped without adding anything in return.
You also don't complain about elemental defenses being still hidden or the various radical changes that are not in line with the series' identity let alone what the original game was going for, makes sense though since the people who bought this remake don't buy or like the rest of the series.
>>717681121
Stats were always out in the open, you could always see every single character's stats and proficiency levels, the only thing they made more transparent was letting you see which tech a specific character can learn or not.
The remake just axed entire layers of mechanics altogether so it's not that you're seeing more, the game just has less stuff altogether.

The PC port was probably the best SE did back then, problem is they didn't want to renew their UE3 license after it expired so they delisted it.
The more aggravating issue is that they ported it to UE4 for Switch and PS4 and they still didn't make a PC port, and that version also runs like ass on PS4 to add insult to injury.

Play the remasters, if you only played the RS2 remake then you still haven't played much at all, you might even want to start with RS2 proper.
SNES RS1 is kinda bad so leave it for later when you're actually accustomed to the series and can at least try to understand what it was going for.

Still not a good sign the best entry in your franchise is the first game and mainly because it was an early playable action RPG on a handheld.

Only the prologue is translated for RS2 on SNES. The remaster is the only translated version.

RS1 is fully translated but very rough. It may be worth at least checking out using fast forward if you like the series.

RS3 is good and the SNES version is translated. The translation patch is called ver 0.30 but it is actually fully in English.

1 is really rough and honestly not a good time unless you really like the series and can deal with a lot of jank.
2 is untranslated outside of the remaster.
3 has a dogshit MT english patch that is full of errors, mistranslations and is also unfinished, so technically the remaster is the only translated version.

Final Fantasy VI, VIII, and IV. SaGa Frontier, Romancing SaGa 2, SaGa Frontier 2. Top 3 and in no particular order. I like the rest of the games but haven't played Revenge of the Seven. I have also not played FFXI, XIII and the sequels, XIV, XV and XVI. For Mana, Trials, Final Fantasy Adventure, and Legend.

Esper/Mutants grow stats depending on what they use, some weapons give STR, some give AGI, spellbooks give INT and so on.
They also learn random skills unique to their race, remember to not dump AGI though because that is what determines your hit chance, if your AGI is too low you won't be able to hit stuff.

You have to eat meat that will elevate you to another tier. Monsters are solid in the first game. Can carry you to near the end of the second game. Are kinda middling but easy to power up in Frontier.

Monsters change forms by eating other monsters' meat, once you eat meat you get a roll for changing forms.
How that works in the first game is that every monster has a specific meat rank that looks up to a table of possible monster forms, the higher this meat rank is the better the pools for monster forms are, the rule of thumb is to eat boss monsters' meat as they tend to be much higher rank than common encounters.

i will say that two mechanics from romancing saga do make the gameplay, for me, vastly superior to other jrpgs

>lp
having a set amount of times you can revive a character is a very good mechanic that breaks the tedium of a lot of jrpg bosses (endless revive characters against superboss)
>item slots (in the case of romancing saga 2)
having a set amount of items also means you can't rely for free on things like mega-elixers or whatever.

these two small changes make
