Old NES and SNES games were often modeled around Arcade games. Games which were never designed to be beaten, but to milk quarters out of kids by ramping up difficulty over time and charging you to respawn. You can identify them by them by the meaningless Score value on screen somewhere. That's for Arcade style "high scores". Serves no purpose in a game you actually own.

rewind would be like creating savestates every 2 seconds. Do you not see how retarded that sounds? Well you think its the same so you have something wrong with you in the first place. The argument here is that both these methods ruin the experience of playing a game with a win and lose state and that rewind is even worse. But you seem to actually like both of them, so you're not even wrong, you're just beyond retarded.
Anonymous No.717708157 >>717708863

>The intent isn't.
It effectively is. The single iota of effort pressing the save state button before a tricky section of a game doesn't really make a difference. You're still going back before it happened, you're still not playing the game by its own rules. If you're against rewinds, you have no reason to not be against save states as well.

So? Some people do that. That changes nothing, especially when you're not always using the rewinds nor the save states when they're made.
>The argument here is that both these methods ruin the experience of playing a game with a win and lose state
I don't agree that they ruin the experience because it's just losing out on tedium most of the time but yes, they both do the same thing, so if you're against one you should be against the other.

I don't care how people beat a game, but they should be aware that their opinions are inherently less valuable than those who beat it as intended. Games are a full experience media, and by not engaging with the standard rules you forfeit a piece of engagement, similarly as to a deaf person reviewing a movie. They can, and should, stand by their opinions but note the discrepancy. By failing to do so, they lack credibility.

Anonymous No.717715903
Just replace the rewind system with frequent preset autosave/continue spots. No need to run around for five minutes to get back to a boss fight, but no reversing every single mistake you make at will either. If you really want a rewind system make it have finite uses you have to replenish, like continues, or restrict when it can be activated in other ways.

To make my point more directly, Elden Ring's balancing issues go both ways and there's a reason people get shamed for using some of its more infamous easy modes instead of engaging with the things they're fighting. There are easier and harder ways to earn a victory, but some of them don't really count as earning one at all.

What sticks out to me is that people will shout from the rooftops that all ways of beating a game are equally valid and the best way to win is the one that's most fun for you, then they'll claim that anyone who says otherwise is just an elitist who wants to prove they're a true gamer.
Nigga, you are the ones desperate for approval here. If you weren't insecure about proving you really beat the game, you wouldn't care what they think, and you definitely wouldn't be taking your time to give prepared speeches on how toxic it is to claim winning on Super Extra Easy with cheat engine is an identical accomplishment to winning on Very Hard.
I don't personally get upset if a person has a hard time on their first playthrough due to inexperience and uses a strong weapon because their skill can't bridge the gap yet. What bugs me is seeing people run around shaming an entire playerbase and misrepresenting their points just to cover up the fact that said people wanted to prove they were part of the club and are now crying about how someone called them out on not really having the merit they're trying to claim.
>b-but the devs included it
Yeah, to make the game easier and get a wider audience. You aren't going to be seen the same way as those who've been in the club for a while if you only joined when the membership requirements changed. You can accept it and be a newfag like we all used to be, or you can demand full recognition for free and prove you really don't belong.

NES and SNES games were modeled around the console format, secrets, high scores and different endings were meant to incentivize multiple playthroughs, battery saves, passwords, continues that didn't start you all the way at the beginning, mastery and sharing what you found with friends.

High scores do serve a purpose, you're supposed to share and play the game with friends and family and compete with them for higher scores, Legend of Zelda was a labyrinth of bombable walls and secrets and Mario had random 1-ups, secret warp rooms and the hidden vine to the sky level because you were supposed to find that and share what you found with your friends.

The arcades of the past disencitivized stuff like that because they wanted you to pay more, the nes and SNES era was where they could take advantage of what the arcades weren't doing

I used rewind in games like Metroid when I ended up going in a room I couldn't pass through for lack of an item, like the one in Super with the light bugs that needs the grapple beam.

Actually. third gen console games were often made to be HARDER than arcades (check the all the bullshit they pulled when porting Ghost and Goblins and every possible spaceship game ever, for example). This is because arcades make constant passive income, but consoles get money by game sales while also accounting selling the console at loss, and it was way harder to convince kids without disposable income to somehow pay 60$ on games when rental stores existed. So they created games that needed manuals, guides and multiple weeks of trial and error to be mastered and completed on a single weekend of rental time
A common complaint people had with the genesis for example was that it's games were too short, as they often tried to be direct ports of arcade classics with infinite lifes, so they spiced up the difficulty and brought back continues in future titles

Sorry but I played Link to the past this past week and had to use it for the ice and ganon's castle dark world dungeons.
The runbacks are actually insane.

I'll use save states in place of in-game save points, since it makes reloading a lot faster, but this rewinding shit is gay as fuck

This is the right answer. If a game has infinite continues (Mega Man series), no real reason NOT to use it if you don't want to go through the bullshit of a death course again just for another shot at a boss.

Save scumming is fine if it's designed to be played that way. Classic Doom, for example.
I always save before entering a new room and reload from before I entered the room if I die in there.

I'd go a step further and say if you didn't tie your hands behind your back and reach the credits playing only with your toes after taking a dozen sleeping pills two hours prior, you didn't actually "beat" the game.

This. That's exactly what I do. If you're taking back every single event that happens with rewind like the obnoxious whore in the OP, you're not even playing the game by any stretch of the imagination.

well, in the case of shmups you don't get an actual ending unless you 1cc, so yes i think in that case it can be considered not beating it if you just use continues

Same. I will still feel bad if I use a save state in something like Mega Man. I don't want to use save states, but I will if I get frustrated. It's not like I'm trying to be an online personality connected to how many games I've beaten. Mike is different. He has a blog for the games he's beaten on stream and the games he's beaten with his famous personal rulesets that ramp up the difficulty far beyond what the devs ever intended.
