The switch and the deck have literally no similarities beyond being "handheld" devices
One is a PC for people who already have a sizeable steam library, the other is a console for casuals who want to play mario games

I'm considering getting a steam deck because
>I want to play ps2 and gamecube games on a handheld + press a button to fast forward through slow jrpgs
>I want to read visual novels and play dungeon crawlers
>I want to play a few ps3 games that have been ported to PC
But I don't want to spend hours getting each game to run, I don't want games to crash or have other issues, I don't want to use steam, and I feel like at this point it's probably better to wait for the steam deck 2

Deck wins automatically by virtue of being a PC in a handheld form factor. That was it's selling point. Not that it was more powerful than the Switch 1.

Also comparing the raw power of a brand new device to one designed almost 5 years ago is disingenuous. Yeah no shit it's more powerful, but it's also just a console and the Deck is PC. Aka you lose. And you're gay.

All of those systems were good and had good games. The only one that outright failed was the PS Vita. A system does not have to "kill" another system to be good and to fill a market niche that is not being filled by the competition, and that's what all of these systems do. Video games are not a zero sum game.

Anonymous No.717743154
The game gear wasn't as efficient and it didn't have a decent library.
The PSP was just full of ports while the DS had a lot of original stuff (besides the shovelware).
The PS Vita had barely fucking anything. The 3DS was actually fairly underwhelming, but at least it did have some games.
The Switch however it's a ports machine. 98% of titles on it are either ports of older games or indie games that are already on PC. The Deck, without emulation, has most of those natively (and of course runs them much better), and a lot more. It's not being sold on retail stores, it has no exclusives whatsoever and it's not as convenient to set up as a Switch or a Switch 2 so it's logical it wouldn't sell all that well. But someone who loved the DS based on its library would probably rather go for a Deck based on the fact they can play just about 10 times more games on it, without counting either emulated games or games that perform poorly on a Deck.

Hardware has plateaued no more new inventions in manufacturing are being made at least not that fast anymore.

Meaning the same hardware won't ever get any cheaper and all "new" hardware does is... be the same hardware as previously just with more shit in it and hence more expensive. Hardware doesn't go down in price anymore.

So we likely won't see a Deck 2 anytime soon and if we do it will be MUCH more expensive as it will use much more expensive parts as well.

That's also why the PS5 and Xbox Series never went down in price (even went up in the US to reflect the tariffs).

For hardware to get cheaper now, all you can hope for is reducing manufacturing costs either by reducing labor costs or resource costs and to remove trade barriers. Any improvements in manufacturing is now something you can't just bet on, they will happen randomly and infrequently now.

I got memed into thinking it would be compatible, run games with performance worth playing, and emulate just about everything one could realistically expect to emulate on a handheld. Instead I got a powerpoint presentation with a battery life that gives a Game Gear a run for the money and a community of insufferably smug, delusional autists who get their jollies from tweaking fan curves until they can run 10 year old games at a silky smooth 40fps.I regret my deck immensely. Streaming also doesn't work worth a shit even on a wired and docked connection, but it would've been foolish to anticipate that to begin with so I can't really even be mad about it. There are more games that run on the Deck than games that don't, that and the form factor is the entire sellingpoint.

Who cares if it can run Silent Hill 2 Remake since it can run literally every other Silent Hill game ever released, who cares if it can run the latest Ubislop game when it can run every single one of their games released from 2022 and back to the first game they ever made, who cares if it can run the latest Mario Kart when it can run every Mario Kart game from 8 Deluxe all the way back to the original SNES game, etc.
