And so they make lots of games for their consoles to entice you to buy one to buy them all and play them all. Nobody put out new handhelds for 5 years. The first one was the deck and valve outright said the weren't thinking about nintendo at all while giving numerous other reasons for why they did it. And then almost immediately after the deck a whole slew of handheld PCs cropped up after seeing the deck's success, which is exactly what valve wanted. Yes and no. Technically yeah they are part of the hardware space but also no in that they very much a software focused company. I wouldn't even be surprised if they never made a second Deck since if the endgoal is to push for the SteamOS they can just partner with other hardware manufactures and let them do the heavy lifting like with Lenovo. Unless they HEAVILY expanded there's no way in hell they'd ever be more of a niche in the hardware space. Wouldn't surprise me if the next CEO does end up doing this and trying to turn Valve into the 4th console manufacturer. Or third depending on whether Microsoft stays in the race.

They are for sure making a deck 2, but your overall point is correct. They're not in this for the hardware. It's not what they're making money off of, just a vehicle. They would be more than happy to step aside and let other companies make the hardware for them. Though I don't know how well other companies are going to step up and valve is by far the best positioned to be the cheapest given they can subsidize the hardware with steam. But either way, the end result is still the same; a catalyst for the slow saturation of pc in the portable space.

People equate gaming experiences to specific hardware, software and even controllers.

That's why people harbor fond nostalgia for specific consoles. PC has no such aura. Nobody is going to feel nostalgic about PCs ever.

The issue here is how we're interpreting the word influence. Valve wasn't influenced in the sense that they weren't making the Deck as a direct competitor, in the same way Sony will with their own attempt at a Switch like. But they were influenced in that they saw the Switch's success as a hybrid home console/handheld and thought to do the same for Steam. The concept already existed before the Switch but it was the Switch that made Valve take that into consideration.

They can just sell two different versions, which is already happening with the legion go s. And yes, steamos is way better for gaming. Microsoft is also looking to put steam front and center on future xbox's so they've basically given up on trying to compete with steam itself in any real way. SteamOS is still so small it's not really any threat to them, but we'll see if they can fix windows. I doubt it, because it's the bloatware, adware, spyware, telemetry and all the constantly running background processes they make money off of that's slowing windows down.
