Yeah actually they did improve the open world. They aren't super unique or as interesting as the main dungeons. But a decent (OPTIONAL) extra.

If they didn't exist you and a bunch of other faggots would endlessly complain about how Elden Ring is just a bunch of empty areas between dungeons.

Thats another issue with elden ring:
You can be too weak or too strong when arriving in a new area. I went north of limgrave in my first playthrough, completely ignoring the south part.
It wasn't too difficult to go north, but when I went back it was all too easy, I wanted to explore but felt punished (as in there was no challenge to overcome) for doing it in the wrong order.

For whatever reason, if a player comes upon a door and decides it would be best for him not to enter it and see what it hides then the adventure game has FAILED.

Anonymous No.717746218 >>717746643
The problem with the "dungeons are optional just ignore them bro" rhetoric is that you don't know what's in them until you actually do them.

So I wanted to roleplay as a Spear guy, and there's only a couple of spears in the game really, I would get bored of using the same starting spear I found in the first 10 minutes of the game and then never again something after 30 hours. So naturally I couldn't skip any dungeon I came across because it might have given me something I needed for my build. Playing so many dungeons ended up diluting my overall fun experience with some boring filler slog. I did not feel the same way about Dark Souls 1 for example.
(A solution would be to check the wiki, but that's not helpful if you played Day 1 like me, and checking wiki on your first playthrough is lame anyway.)

if you dont care about finding all the items, reading all their lore descriptions, and try to peice it all together, then fromslop may not be for you.
i unironically farmed for full sets of armor i would never wear in ds1, 2 AND 3, all because i wanted to read all the parts, because damn do they flesh out the enemies you fight.
and i enjoyed doing the catacombs, because they were only like, 10 minutes, i knew they were low stakes, and had a fun time just dungeon delving, PLUS i got a cool ash telling me about how these archers used to ride wolves because their legs dont work, which tells me why the albernauticals are all crawling, thats cool.

If you knew what was behind the doors it would be a much bigger problem for the game with loot hidden behind doors. From took the DS catalog of mechanics which were designed for linear levels and slapped it all unto an open world, 1 to 1. It doesn't fit. It's why most of everyone agrees that the large dungeons of Elden Rings are the best parts of the game because in those area, the game is accordance with its own design.
