Nintendo was the last of the big three to allow that to be widespread. The Wii had probably less than ten games that ever got downloadable patches and I'm pretty sure all of them also had the discs reissued as well so only people with the older versions of discs needed to update. I'm not defending current Nintendo and I'm not buying a Switch 2, but I won't blame them for this because at this point there's no difference between a game key card and a PS5 disc that technically has a game on it, but it's destined to be an unfinished version of the game.

Game companies have been pulling this bullshit for over a decade now, even during the PS3 era. You can always make offline backup copies of most PC games.
While sharing games is illegal cracks and even Steam emulators are not and you can use them to play any games you made backups of.
On top of this i can still download and play steam games i bough 20 years ago.
Meanwhile Online platforms on consoles close in less than 10 years.
