Actually enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. I thought Metaphor had a lot stronger writing than Persona has had in ages, and the fantasy road trip gimmick was a nice shake-up to the calendar system.

I thought the archetype system was fun too, though I think the Royal Archetypes kind of bungle it up by giving the late-game an obvious best-choice end-goal to work towards instead of forcing you to come up with your own fully customized party choices.

Well i did start a solo character run like i do with most rpgs, but it's kind of a pain in the ass since you can't swap your entire party out for a long time, so i have to use cheat engine to lock everyone else's hp to 0.
Except since everyone's "supposed" to start at 1 minimum, having anyone dead when you start an encounter causes the game to crash, so you have to keep flipping their health around which got annoying.

Yeah, Rella and by extension Junah's backstory arc was the one thing I felt was rushed. The game gives you more jobs but they are useless lvl 1 so you have to grind them. The social links are pretty boring, disconnected from the plot, retardproof since thye will always move forward (meaning you dont have any agency on how they develop) and MANDATORY so you can get better jobs.
As for the combat itself, its just more of the same.
The graphics stay ugly.
The demo already gave you all the music you will be listening for the rest of the game, mostly.

So not only do you take zero damage and your build is irrelevant, it's the best way to deal punish damage to enemies too. It's what the gameplay hinges on completely. If you don't like parrying, don't fucking play it. I thought it was fun, for parry slop, but not a 10/10 masterpiece and I fucking hate all stories with a retarded "all a dream" twist. Yeah, it's the perfect way to add a skill curve to turn based battles.
You start every battle being cautious and dodging and failing a lot because you don't know the attacks. Then you start to learn the patterns and can dodge consistently, and then you start trying to parry and get punished for missing until you can finally parry consistently.
If your build sucks you won't survive long enough to learn because getting hit will wreck you. Every boss battle has its own incredibly satisfying arc of defeat, struggle, and triumph as a result. It also solves the problem of repetitive encounters because you've learned their patterns and can counter every time, making them take a fraction of the time. It's frankly astonishing so few JRPGs have tried this up until now.

Nah. Has some of my favorite bosses in a MegaTen game. I fought the hardest Tower Trial Dragon before all the others and 10 levels under level and it was a fucking blast adjusting my strategy to win. The game really takes some of the best aspects of various MegaTen games. Not a fan of the gameplay. Found the job system barebones (playing it right after Crystal Project certainly didn't help), the dungeon design was very average and i don't like the social sim stuff from Persona. Didn't care for the story (to be fair, i don't care for 99% of video game stories, including stories that people usually praise like RDR2, TW3, etc.). The in-game graphics were genuinely subpar and the OST while not bad is my least favorite from any Atlus games since Strange Journey and Devil Survivor.

Overall a 6/10 for me. Crystal Project, Romancing Saga 2 and NEO The World End With You are much better JRPGs from this decade.

My theory is that they had more planned but it got scrapped. The story really rushes to the finish by then, and you realize that most of the church villains are completely pointless and just fade away hoping you don't notice after Forden dies. Rella's conflict is also rushed then pushed out of the way ASAP.

Overall I enjoyed the game but the only thing that fucked me up was each character seemingly being on a different set of rules for their naming scheme.
Some use their last name as "main" when their first name is perfectly fine and applicable, some use their first names only etc.
I thought about this for the entire 80 hours i put into the game trying to rationalize what could have been the decisions from JP devs, EN devs and whoever else would be involved in those decisions.
