I hate how everything moved towards minimalism and now even the menus lacks any sort of charm to it
What is so appealing about muh faceless minimalism? Isn't more recognizable UI more marketable? People still go on how they remember the PS1 start up screen, which is one of the things that led to Sony to become so iconic. Why would you not want that for your console.

There was once a time we could boot up our wii, pull up a full globe of the world like we were the leader of some HQ, and look at the weather anywhere while ethereal music plays.
Then nintendo decided that was too fun and made their new UI no fun allowed

I don't think the decline of this is purely corporate but indicative of an actual spiritual decline in the population. As time goes on we're more and more detached from our sense of beauty and wonder and that is reflected even in the products we buy.

As a kid the gamecube menu music made me feel uneasy. When my discs got scratched I always crossed my fingers that it'll load just so it wouldn't go into the menu

3DS will always be peak in design between customization and personality. Always playing some kind of ambient music depending on what you are doing, looking at photos, sitting on the main menu, browsing the eshop or even the system setting, one detail I always liked was how the system settings music would change once you go into the internet settings where it became more upbeat. I recall for whatever reason having issues getting my 3DS to connect to the wifi and that upbeat music kinda just motivated me more to fix it.

totally agree. theres a bizarre apathy a lot of people seem to have over this. most taking a "whats the point"
i feel its the same thing leading both companies and consumers to just putting everything on PC rather than enjoying consoles, or even just watching game-play online rather than playing it themselves

But you are telling me there is NOBODY working on the switch 2 UI like, "hell yeah bro I am working on the fucking switch 2 UI?" You would think somebody would at least have some ideas and some pride in their work as well as its impact since it is such a popular product.

I like minimalism, and even I'm sick of everything being minimalist.
No, I don't want to go back to needless clutter everywhere like someones MySpace page, but we've reached a minimalism so minimal that we've lost a lot of functionality and the Asthetics may as well be me staring at a white wall.
I have a theory minimalism was pushed so fucking hard as a cost savings corpo strategy to then strip out core features and call it minimalism.

People need to call it out for being ugly and make fun of it. When companies start getting mocked for selling minimalist slop at maximum pricing it should push SOME change in design philosophy

Minimalism in of itself is a marketing plot so that companies can gain more profit with less effort. There's a reason why there's a movement to get rid of waste in your house to make you feel "soooo much better". It's to desensitize you from the growing soullessness because you live your whole life in soullessness, and less money spent on "junk in your home" can be used on digital goods.

I always thought it was lacking but non offensive and realize much of my feelings towards it that are positive are nostalgia based.
>PS1 was hands down the best opening
>PSP is my 2nd fav. Flankly that style of quick animation, pleasant sound, and quick fade to your loaded game should have been the intro template forever!
>PS2 was inoffensive and I have positive nostalgia for it. I appreciate that a decade later I learned those squares corresponded to memory values...
>PS3 was weird. The sound of an orchestra warming up? I mean whatever, the menu itself was fire but the opening was dumb.

Never played Vita, 4, or 5 do no clue if those are any good.
A simple pleasing start up sound and quick animation goes a long way.
That's why I hated Gamecube and Xboxs start ups. They sounded like a something was going wrong with my system before my game loaded.
Dreamcast had a perfect intro for that generation.

Yes indeed. I understand that the PS2 intro can make you feel nostalgic and immediately transport you back to those days but for myself, even back in that gen I remember being extremely disappointed in it. It starts out good with the chimes and it truly leads you into thinking it's building up towards something but the chimes just cut off abruptly as if someone hastily turns down the volume knob. It cuts of so abruptly, followed by complete silence and a black screen that ranges from 3 to 6 seconds depending on the game before you get that 'whomp' sound effect with the PS2 logo onscreen.

To be honest, the ps2 game start was a great start. That simple "whomp" with the Playstation 2 text then a simple fade was perfect.
Compared to everyone else, PS2 intro was MUCH better than anoying Saturday morning cartoon xylophone or the sound of an electrical plant failing at the start screen.

They wanted ethereal, they hit the mark. Good job Playstation.
I will say, while playing durring the day didn't feel too special starting up the PS2, playing at night had a very comfy nighttime feel.
Xbox and gamecube at night scared the shit outta me.
I realy wish xbox didn't screw the pooch so hard after 360 cause the amount of memories i have and the way the 360 start up and menues felt were incredible

You know that’s not going to happen. You know that’s NEVER going to happen, and frankly you’re stupid for believing in such a fantasy
Here’s what happens
>Every company pushes minimalist design
>You can’t possibly avoid it since everyone uses it. You can try, but good luck doing anything
>Thus companies can point and go “see, it has no impact on anything, it’s the way to go!”
No amount of mockery or outcry will have any impact since they can just point to their numbers and say otherwise

Analogue's Mega SG boot up sequence is probably the best of the past 20 years. Simple, tranquil, and elegant. I'd love to design a boot-up sequence for my PC someday.
