I have nothing against remakes of old games, but I want new pixel art, not a fucking 3D game with sprites that don't even fit the scenery.
The games from Tengo Project, or whatever those guys call themselves, are the best examples of decent modern pixel art. In some of the games, like Wild Guns, people don't even realize that the art has been redone because it's so faithful to the original. Others do a radical reimagining, like Ninja Saviors. But they're all top-notch pixel art, which is what matters.

I actually genuinely fucking loved I Am Setsuna and it makes me sad that it having Chrono Trigger adjacent gameplay led to people calling it "the new Chrono Trigger" before it released only for Chrono Trigger fans to get pissed off because it was the exact opposite of Chrono Trigger in presentation and tone since its whole fucking gimmick is about being a sad game with a piano-only soundtrack in a snow-only region, and that hate it got became its legacy.

HD-2D is great, but remasters are often incredibly shit and change things that ought not have been changed. My favorite game of all time got a remaster that added on an extra story chapter that completely ruined the story, though it did improve the gameplay a ton.

I think Live A Live does a good job at translating the style, it's nice that everything's scaled around the battle-size sprites now, genuinely a higher resolution work for everything involving the overworld. Honestly something I wished more remakes would've done for these kinds of S/NES RPGs, bring the overworld to scale with the great battle sprites the games already had. Do wish they would've made the battle sprites even higher to compensate, but I feel like the animation added to everything helps with that, and they do have higher resolution sprites for the final bosses to help sell their scale, like their source sprites being huge in their own right did in the original game.

I'll be honest I was never a big fan of Sugiyama's sample choices on SFC. They sound oddly limp for whatever reason, and I think they don't capture the orchestral style that well. He did a much better job with the NES chiptunes, and I think his PS1 samples, while still a bit "weak", have the benefit of sounding much cleaner than the SNES ones going for them. Sugiyama's music sounds much better either pure chiptune or orchestral

SNES's audio in general always has this "too soft" feeling to it, not limited to DQ though. Lots of games don't feel like they have the "punch" they should because of how rounded it tends to sound.

I don't know what they did, but EarthBound's music sounds like literal perfection. Maybe it's the lack of any attempt whatsoever at orchestra, everything is jazz, rock, or EDM. Now that I think about it Mega Man X also sounds amazing and it's a pure rock OST. I think the SNES just didn't have the chops for orchestra.

I think I notice it most with DQ myself, probably since, at least as far as DQ 1-3 are concerned, there's the NES versions to directly compare them to, which I feel show the lack of punch fairly bluntly. Something with the percussion? Not sure. But listen to the battle theme on SNES vs NES, I'm a bit surprised SNES skimps out on the kinda "galloping" track, you can hear in the background, I think it's replacing it with the cymbal track? If it's there it's even more faint than even on GameBoy, which I think is a shame. I'm 100% just being autistic but it's something that's always bugged me a bit about the SNES arrangements for Dragon Quest music specifically, something about it just feels like it's losing some punch.

That's them attempting realism. The chiptune version is insanely crisp and clean with its note attacks, something like that is simply not possible on a real instrument, especially a brass instrument. You could get that kind of attack on a piano or guitar maybe as they're struck/plucked instruments, but not on a wind instrument. Also the SNES version adds reverb which is also going to muddy up and dilute the attacks.
