How is Rebirth disc 2? Disc 2 started after she dies, she just died at the end of Rebirth. All the things you said just make it even less disc 2. We can't play as Cid or Vincent and we haven't seen Rocket Town, all of that is in disc 2 in the original. So we have all of disc 2 and 3, as well as some disc 1 shit still to cover in part 3. The thing is Rebirth goes through so much effort to explain the Black Materia when they didn't have to. They already explained how magic works in FF7. The Cetra were able to use magic naturally so if a person picks up a Materia containing that knowledge then they'll instinctively know how to do it too. My problem is the sheer difference, as if the dub and the choices made back in 2020 were entirely improvised or not planned out on it, and then they just had to deal with the consequences of such a choice. It's one thing to pretend you sound old, that tends have a fake roughness and attempt to be gruff and shit, but it's another when you can't even tell it's the same voice actor because the fake-old Red voice vs. the real teen Nanaki voice is so utterly different and completely jarring.

Not to mention, the original game's Japanese, if I remember right, did do the trick of changing formality to informality once the truth was out, but as others have said, it had no actual voices to distinguish this - and Red XIII in Advent Children didn't attempt this weird shit with a single line he got. It's one of those stylistic choices they did where it "makes sense" what they're doing but the execution was really, really bad. And teen voice Nanaki is incredibly grating anyway, too high pitched.

Here's a thought: what if Aerith bluntly tells the party what happened in OG. You can't say they give a fuck about the will of the planet. They killed the will of the planet in Remake. Maybe the party doesn't know specifics but Aerith and Sephiroth do. The whole reason Sephiroth lost in OG was because by the time he accounted for Aerith's threat, it was too late. So if he's a fucking time traveler, his first objective should be to kill Aerith at all costs. She wields the White Materia, the thing he's so afraid of that he doesn't even leave his crater because he has to hold it down before it fucks up his plans. And Aerith knows she needs to activate White Materia as soon as possible while begging the Planet to spare humanity. So everyone's trajectories need to change because both know their scripts and are trying to update them in their favor.

It has times that drag but OG was also a smaller game and thus had more brevity. Kalm to Junon is kind of a drag. Then Rocket Town to Temple. Temple can go pretty quickly if you know where to go but if you don't then that might get annoying. From here the pacing is actually pretty good. Not quite as strong as Midgar but a close second. All the way through to Northern Crater and Junon again. Then the pace slows to a crawl when you reach Mideel all the way to saving Cloud

Besides a puzzle or two being kind of obnoxious, the rule of thumb for everything in Remake/Rebirth versus OG is that by the time you've completed it in OG if you're competent at figuring things out, you're maybe a quarter of the way done in the remake if that. Remember those sewers in Remake that were their whole own dungeon? That was just a quick sprint through a couple rooms in OG. Shinra Tower was traversing the upper floors with some puzzles here and there but you're in and done in less than half an hour at most. etc etc.

Hell, the whole Gongaga sequence that has you leisurely carting things along and pulling wires to circuits, with big bosses back to back and all sorts of shit going down, didn't exist at all in OG. The extra Shinra parts of the Dyne battle didn't exist, it was just Barret vs. Dyne. The list goes on. I don't hate every change with the remake, but they really tried to pad out some sequences or throw in new stuff that I'm very iffy on.

Watching them do this was my first exposure to Rebirth. I saw a stream from some guy who got the game before it released and it was the Shinra Mansion part. Absolutely insane how they turned like 4 screens into an hour long box puzzle slog capped by an obnoxious taunting hologram boss battle. I've really enjoyed the extra characterization. Jessie, Barret, Wedge, Biggs, and Elena have all had lots of great stuff in the remake games that made me like them more and more. The games still feel waaay too long to me though. I've always been a massive FF7 fan, so I'll eat up whatever they shit out, but I would have liked the remake (not plural because I still think it should have been just one game) being just more cinematic straight retellings of the original game with just a few extra parts. I can understand though that they probably were worried about blowing the budget on all the assets needed to do that and creating what would be a relatively short game that didn't recoup the investment.

I've been happy with what we got, but it remains to be seen whether they fuck up the ending. And the remakes absolutely do NOT replace the original for me. I consider them more supplemental stuff like Advent Children or the other games.

Like, so many of these characters got so little time to do or focus on anything in the original because it blitzes through so much stuff that it's nice to see the expansion, and really, VII's party was overplayed by many on the interactions they do when the original was pretty barren in some regards about it but the remake massively bolsters that to making it actually feel like a crew that gives a shit for each other. But the game design is a completely different story when it comes to trying to "expand" everything besides combat sequences, like whoever is doing all these puzzles and extra layers of bullshit to areas missed the point entirely because big budget.

I just treat it like I do the Resident Evil remakes at this point: supplements and alternatives, a good view of modern versus classic and solid on their own regard rather than the extremist "NO ONLY ONE CAN BE GOOD" bullshit some people prattle on about, but hardly any sort of replacement.

I have seen plenty of human children less than 1 year old act completely docile and cooperative in public while they scream, throw fits about everything, and toss food on the floor at home simply because they are nervous in front of strangers and act out less. I've always felt that Red XII's personality is something similar. He doesn't speak much and tries to act mature when he does in front of most people. He knows enough about how he SHOULD act to do that well, but when he lets his guard down he slips into just doing whatever he feels like doing, and that means speaking a bit more like a kid and being a bit more impulsive. I think the remake overdid it a little, but what I'm talking about was always there in the Japanese.

Rogers voice was only bad in those games they started telling him to make his voice so deep it didn't even fit the charter anymore.
