If Kingdom Hearts has Disney characters in it, how come we never got a Kingdom Hearts cartoon or animated movie?

Dunno. Any baffling Disney decision between the 80's and mid 2000's can probably be traced back to Eisner, albeiththough. Based on the pilot pitch, probably would've been Squeenix's version of DiC's bing bing wahoo from Brooklyn in any case.

AFAIK it's a Disney IP not Square's, so it makes sense for them to keep it vidya-related instead of making a proper film off it, specially since all other Disney characters in it already got their own films. aside from a few unexpected good games like Toy Story 2 and Aladdin, licensed Disney shit is inconsistent as fuck so KH gets to cover the gaming part of their merchandise.

Go read them if you want a cartoon. It's not animated but it's got as much "extended canon" trivia in it as stuff like Hercules' show building upon the film, or Aladdin's and pretty much all other followup TV shows

Guy who worked on and then leaked the pilot said that it tested the best out of everything else that was in early development, but Disney still passed on it and never gave a solid answer for why. He says his best guess is that after the first game was made and became a success, Nomura went on to work on the other games, and so Disney didn't want to risk getting him annoyed or angry by creating a show that (while following the main story beats) would go and do its own thing.

Disney literally has an explicit, written agreement that anything they do with Kingdom Hearts MUST have Nomura's seal of approval, presumably after VCast was a total flop and the Sora Epcot costume was fucking horrifying. It's why Sora took so long to get into Smash; Disney was more than willing to play ball, but Nomura wanted to take time to figure out if it should affect KH canon at all.

They still find ways to fuck with things (like having the actual movie writers/directors consult on Disney worlds in KH3, which slowed down development tremendously because most of them don't have any clue what KH is or how gamedev works)
