Why would you expect this game to hold people for long? You can see everything it has to offer in a couple of days and then there is no sane reason to ever play it again.

This is a huge issue going back to any online game, its just diehard autists who only play on like 2 or 3 of their favourite maps and remove 90% of the game's content from their rotation.
I remember going back with my friends to replay battlefield 4 and blops 1 and out of dozens of hours between those we played on like 10% of their maps.

I still think TF2 is the biggest offender in this regard. The game damn well has 200+ maps in it, and thousands of custom maps and yet people refuse to play anything other than like 2fort, Dustbowl, Hightower, and Upward. Koth, Control Points, other A/D maps? No games. Alternative modes and custom maps? Abandoned forever.

Plenty of oldschool maps deserve to be played though. The original Arena maps are fantastic but never get played because of shitters who think Arena sucks because it requires teamplay. If you play as a team and stick together, a Medic and an Engineer can help the team find a place to hole up and build uber and shit before pushing the capture point. If you wanna run off and die, that's fine, but it's your own fault. It's the same reason why you don't run off alone in L4D. You do that, you get grabbed, and you die.

They're both longer than the regular respawn time, hence the problem.

Also the possibility of having to sit out a full round anyway because the game sometimes keeps one player out to balance teams.

TF2 is a little unique in that source mapping skills sort of transferred between any games and the sdk was easy to use and released before the google holocaust.
But intrinsic to TF2 it's almost entirely down to releasing when Windows users still made ANYTHING and they could pick up some long time quasi-Valve Employees to make maps for the game.
Most games today are either intentionally or unintentionally shit because people chase perverse incentives in multiplayer gaming now.

Why is it that whenever I try to airblast a Soldier's rocket, it makes the projectile airblast succeeding sound- but the rocket ends up between me and the airblast so I still get hit and die? Am I simply airblasting too early? The airblast doesn't come out of the flamethrower but is projected out a space in front of the flamethrower just enough for a rocket to occupy it?

Depending on the ping difference your client's prediction and the server's opinion of your input can become mildly desynced.
Keep in mind your version of the game for optimization reasons will try to simulate what SHOULD but may not be happening by the time the server hears what you're trying to do.

You CAN press w and s, but for long distances you should avoid it since strafing and moving forwards and backwards behave differently when airborne.
On MOST vanilla maps you can totally press W or S while blast jumping unless your using something like the detonator.

I stopped playing this game 12 years ago after 1,000 hours after realizing I got gud enough to easily beat 90% of players, but to get that last 10% would involve making TF2 my part time job and another 5k hours
