What the actual fuck are you talking about? Is your critique of the game seriously that it has arches you can fly under during planetary missions? With the exception of the rock arches on Corneria it all ultimately amounts to fucking aerobatic maneuvers that don't have any impact on the game beyond "oh cool, an extra silver ring".

That's why they give them talks, cockpit protirts, and VAs for the characters in the ships. You can have both in a series, which Star Fox has done before.

tbf the Star Fox outside of a few moments aren't the darkest things in the world. So it should be pretty easy to make the team fit modern-day Nintendo, at worst, they write it off as the 3rd party dev for it going too off script and call it a day.

The only issues here for Star Fox are the War and Horrors bits since the Lylat wars clearly had a big effect on characters like Fox and Peppy (and the less said about Aparoids horrors the better) along with relationship stuff as seen with things like Command and Goodbye beloved Falco.. Star Fox has never once treated Fox and friends as working in a grey area so that's not an issue, and the only time Star Fox talked about adult things is when Team Star Fox was broke or that one time in Assault Falco confirmed he used to be a space biker.
>it's kind of hard to write about war and the exploit of a team of mercenaries if all that is off the table. and if you just make it pure gameplay like a shoot'em up it won't be enough for an full-price aaa game
You could have them just fight weird alien monster again but less scary. Besides imagine if they did write a game about the exploits of a team of mercenaries like they did with old Star Fox games, I think it would still be gameplay-focused since Nintendo usually focuses on that in there games.

I don't know if I am the only one, but my tiny child's mind interpreted the original SNES game as dark and horrifying. Dying in space combat is scary as shit, and my imagination filled in the gaps between the very primitive 3D graphics and the creepy puppets on the cover of the game, and I concocted my own dark version of the StarFox universe. It was scary as shit. I imagined that Fox and his teammates had their biological legs amputated and replaced with robotic legs to allow them to pull higher Gs. It was a brutal, violent universe. I was scared by it, but I loved it. And somehow I managed to grow up without becoming a furry.
