Balance is worse but consistency is worse too which means usually you can't force one optimal build every game. Usually. Which is what makes it better for me than TFT and other autobattlers like it where the pool is miniscule and you are racing to poach the ~10 or so meta units.

You assemble items, upgrades, and buffs on a limited space with items/weapons taking up different amounts of space, and then fight PvE encounters and other player's ghosts. It is a roguelike.
It is actually really, really fun for the first while and then eventually you notice you keep running into a lot of the same bullshit PvP ghosts and it feels like you either get lucky with a meta build or lose. However, if the $20 price of the current sale seems fair to me. You'd get more than 20 hours of fun out of trying the heroes and enjoying yourself seeing all of the events, PvE encounters, etc. Also the influx of new players will mean less meta bullshit builds at the start.

It does seem a little steep to me personally, but if they release a new hero every 6 months then it's basically a $3.50 monthly fee to keep the servers running and content updated. Plus you can skip any new heroes you don't want.
My main concern is if that isn't enough will they change monetization again or will they just shut everything down? If they do will they allow for some way for people to play offline against ghosts or on private servers?

there will be a single player mode launching after mobile is finished. if it becomes bankrupt anyone can just rip the game and launch a private server that allows for single player. tempo has massive server costs because they do everything on their servers to prevent "cheating". this game can easily be run like backpack battle with minimal fees.
