I always thought the models looked fine, but to be fair the skill animations were really amateurish looking. They were stiff and had very little impact, plus they couldn't figure out how to make transformations work so a lot of characters came off looking weak. They got better about adding some oomph to the attacks in D7 but they still had room for improvement. Haven't seen what Phantom Brave 2's look like.

Also, to me the main upside to swapping to 3d would be to use the models to make better cutscenes but they don't. It's still just pngs talking to each other which fucking sucks.
Plus, the switch to 3d killed the best part of disgaea. The best part of disgaea is how each game improved on the previous and expanded its cast of time, including cameos from not just previous disgaea games but most NIS games plus a lot of the units. Now, we have a fraction of the units and the cameos are solely main characters of disgaea games. We don't get Gig, we don't get Priere, we don't get Zetta, we don't get shit.

The early game can be slow if you try to make a full team because you'll have to split off exp to get them all to level and grind for the HL to get them all equipment but it makes the rest of the main campaign much more easier than fun IMO. I would advise transmigrating/reincarnating your generics to a higher tier as soon as they get enough mana and levels because base stats and weapon affinity are the most important things for making strong characters. You won't have to level them up as much once they get higher base stats.

Sapphire and Raspberyl are really enjoyable characters in their own way, Mao and Almaz are an okay duo that go back and forth between fun and dull, and Mr. Champloo feels like they had all the right ingredients with a right character and then fucked it all up by not giving him much. It's also the beginning of the games breaking away from the Weapon Skill systems, so it still feels like they're trying to figure out the right formula before 4 and 5 really get the best systems. Not a big fan of the missions and the general stoy myself.

Making a lot of characters early is fun and worth the trouble but splitting you EXP 10 ways makes things rough until you get a good grinding map (not until Chapter 4 or 5). Once you can afford to get some decent equipment on everyone it should get easier (and if you can take on the Item World, putting 10 levels into a high-value item can make a huge difference).
It's worthwhile to dump some EXP and stack strong equipment on Laharl, having a unit a few levels ahead of the rest makes securing kills for your weaker units much easier. You don't have to solo the game with him, but having a strong reliable unit to build your strategy around (and throw recklessly into danger when you're rushing through an Item World) can make things a lot easier.
