im not as much of a story guy, but these are some ps1 games with pretty unique and cool gameplay, somewhat lesser known

-Omega Boost (to which id further recommend a modern inspired version, Death in Abyss)

i recently got into breath of fire III, which was nice. chrono cross though a couple of people kept shitting on it, i still i think it's worth checking out just to compare. medievil is a classic, although the style doesn't hide its dated feel as well as you'd think, at least that's what i got from it the last time i played it. you might get a different feel. there's a ton of games for the ps1 surprisingly. i tried to do a big catalogue of games i'd try between the ps1, saturn/dreamcast, n64, and it was a landslide for the ps1. in any case, ill just name a bunch of others:

an obscure one you probably won't like but i wanna share anyway is linda. it's a pretty weird noah's ark simulator where you need to collect monsters before an apocalyptic event occurs, but the direction is unsettling i wanna say. i can't fully describe it, almost like spriggan if you've ever seen that. mysticism, prophecies, death, despair, are thematically placed.

anyway i now need to kill my backlog after recalling these. jesus.

I'll always shill Vandal Hearts in threads like this. Easy enough to pick up for rpg noobs, quick enough to play through for vets to not get bored with it. Specifically the first one, Vandal Hearts 2 has a funky turn system which is fun but takes getting used to. The plot is basic but done well, sometimes having a story without a bunch of twists can make it more digestible.

ps1 games are an affront to the senses

Spyro is the best platformer series if you enjoy those kind of games.

Grew up with pic related and loved it but there's no reason to play it over the pc version

I've been playing some Soviet Strike.
The amount of 90's 'tude this game has is absolutely astonishing, and it's wonderful.

The output of developers back then was insane, Square was able to pack it in so many features and details whilst also working on a bunch of other games at the same time. Today a company of thousands like Bethesda makes a massive expensive game like Starfield and it's complete shit and lacking in everything.

In my opinion I think the PS1 has a stronger overall library over the PS2. You can find a multitude of good to amazing games in every genre and even more unique niche ones as well. There's still some shovel ware and licensed slop but not as much as the PS2.
