What bulbafags don't tell you is that there are several relevant pokemon in the game with a quad resistance to grass. It takes forever to bring down endgame targets like Lance's Dragonite while Charizard just has to click slash twice.

For a game as easy as pokemon, clear times should be the measure for how good each starter is. Squirtle wins by default since it's the speedrunner's starter of choice, so that leaves Bulbasaur and Charmander. Bulbasaur always lags behind Charmander despite the higher speciak stat because it's slower and grass is a commonly resisted type. When Charmeleon learns slash, the game ends since it can now just spam the move and kill everything with much better coverage than razor leaf.

Pokemon was way more unit variations, double elements, abilities that have unique interactions, weather effects, fuckload of buffs, debuffs, turn manipulation effects, held items.
There's just so much more you can do in and outside of battles and team building is also way more fleshed out. Being able to breed any spell onto any demon also ironically makes stuff less unique.

Id recommend trying out a difficulty romhack of Pokemon that actually forces you to interact with the games systems. The mainline games are sadly just undertuned so most of its depth is wasted on it.

Butterfree is actually pretty deceptively strong in game for gen 1 and 2 if you understand the mechanics. In gen 1, badge boosts reapply when you use a boosting move, so using harden 6 times results in something like 400% Defense, 228% every other stat when you have all the boosts. Its like having a mini Mewtwo that can put things to sleep. Butterfree in gen 2 can also punch upwards pretty well right after Sudowoodu, just give it the Nightmare TM to pair with Sleep Powder and the only thing it'll be outright bad again is Jasmine thanks to the Magnenites, Rock Slide Steelix and her healing the Steelix when it gets low on HP
